Ahhh I-Day Now It’s Complete!

As hot as it was that day, it probably felt good! I might add that the command staff never moved until all the New Cadets were securely behind the big doors!
The groundskeeper was never seen again...lol
I tried to upload a picture of them, but it won't allow it...

I agree! It was impressive. The commandant was talking with the families as we were boarding the buses back to parking and he was congenial about it. Today is warm at USMA but Monday looks oppressive.

His comment wasn’t about the strenuous nature of boot camp but it wasn’t a rollie cart either. He thoroughly enjoyed his years in the Navy as a boiler tech.

How is the mission of USNA different than ROTC and OCS?

Mission is to all produce officers, but they are all different. OCS produces officers at the end. Marine OCS being the exception depending on the program. That is why USMC OCS has different lengths of programs for ROTC, PLC and then OCC which covers the rest. Marine OCS works in conjunction with the ROTC training. PLC is longer and OCC the longest. Bottom line, by the time a Midshipmen has entered Marine OCS they have had several years in OCS. They have had training unlike an Plebe Summer, boot camp or even indoc for SMc or ROTC program.

Understandable that your husband doesn't get the rollie cart thing. Hard to roll one up and down vertical ladders anywhere from 2 to 5 decks with a 210# can of plastic chrome ore on it or a 1200/600# steam reducer. :)

What an honor it was today at the Naval Academy to watch 1,195 American young men and women and 14 international Plebes start their honorable and courageous journey from the Alumni Hall to Bancroft Hall. All 875 men and 334 women. I will never forget this day. Sent tears down mother’s face yet son marched with joy and honor. He entered the Bancroft Hall with smiles, conviction, and pride. This day will be eternal. I am most grateful to the United States Navy and the United States Naval Academy for embracing our children to 4 years of tremendous leadership transformation! The ship is now underway.
From the Superintendent’s brief in Alumni Hall on Induction Day:

Class of 2022 Facts:
- 16,086 application received
- Class size: 1,199 US + 14 International
- 28% women
-36% ethically diverse
- 93% varsity athletes, 73% team captains

- 88% Yield - highest in the nation

Thanks I was actually trying to find this information for 2022. My DS was waitlisted for 2022.

And if I remember correctly, this year had highest percentages ever for women, ethnically diverse and varsity sports (along with SAT/ACT, as mentioned above). Go 2022!

what does the 88% yield mean?
and just for the record- my plebe said the carts are just for show- from crossing Alumni Hall to Bancroft - because parents tend to line up there -soon as they enter Bancroft the carts are forfeited and they hall their gear the old fashion way-

Yield means OF THOSE THEY OFFER ADMISSION how many accept it and attend?

So a simple math example is if they get 200 applicants, offer admission to 100, and 88 accept the offer and attend, then the acceptance rate is 50% and yield is 88%.

88% is very good and means to me that the kids who apply to the USNA REALLY want to go there so an overwhelming majority accept the offer of appointment. Definitely can’t blame them for wanting to get a world-class education.

Schools like high yield because that means they’re sought after very much (ie high desirability among HS students).

As you can imagine, HYPSM have yields in the low 80s which is considered high. There are schools that appeal to a certain demographic with high yield like BYU. Schools with low yield could be “safeties” as applicants who are offered admission don’t take the offer and go somewhere else.

Show said Harvard and Stanford are in the low 80s, and other Ivies are in the 60s. (I’d read elsewhere that USMA and USAFA are also in the 80s). That, as the Supe said, is a better indication of a school’s desirability than admission rate. I think I’d agree.

That’s correct. As I mentioned, high yield means high desirability because you’re putting skin in the game by committing to attend.

Applying doesn’t mean high desirability. It can mean “let me throw my name in the ring just to see if I can get admitted.”

What an experience!!!! First time visiting, dropping off my son. The town was welcoming. The academy amazing. So much more than I was expecting.

If I met you? You were fantastic. Didn’t speak to a single parent or family member that wasn’t friendly, kind, wonderful to talk to.

Also didn’t expect to feel like I joined a club, but now I understand what is meant by “welcome to the Navy family”. I felt like I belonged.

And yes I had to purchase a suitcase to take home my 3 trips to THE store.

Ahh...don’t feel too bad,...I graduated 33 years ago and I still have to bring a second bag for all the stuff my wife buys at THE store...:)

We had been out to USNA last summer for the Summer Seminar. We feel so much support from the other parents. At the hotel, there were hugs of support, congratulations, and a lot of pride. It was so easy to strike up conversations. We were really appreciative of this community. Looking forward to new friendships.

Folks I’m excited just by reading your posts! Would love to meet you folks one day during visits, perhaps Parents Weekend in August. My experience has been likewise! Loved it and loved the charming Annapolis City Town. We can’t wait til we go back again.
