On Friday my DS was offered a full-ride scholarship to MMI for the fall. We are SO excited, so honored! I have not spoken to the school yet, they contacted my DS and my phone was being miserable/not working- so I will call on Monday to iron out all the details.

So, I would love to hear others' experiences, helpful hints- anything that seems pertinent to this new endeavor. (Like: they want me to send him with his own ironing board? Have they traveled on a plane recently?!)

We are excited, but he's my first fledgling- the mom in me is wistful, to say the least. (BUT feeding one less teenage boy DOES seem to have perks...)

Thank you all for sharing our excitement AND sharing your experiences!

DS just returned home after a year at MMI. He will be home for about 55 days before reporting to WP. Quite simply he says going to MMI was the best thing that ever happened to him. The SAP program seems to have cracked the code for admittance to the academies as a very high percentage of their cadets earn appointment to the academy of their choice.
No need to travel heavy, Selma which is about 20/30 minutes away has every store you will ever need.

Do you have any specific questions?

I just graduated from MMI Saturday with my associates & 2 offers to service academies. I can honestly say MMI changed my life for the better & it's something you'll love. The SAP program is great. It will 100% prepare you for the service academies academic wise and physically. You'll also make connections with people who will be joining you at your academy that will last forever. In addition to that you'll have developed strong study habits & time management skills. If he's flying in I wouldn't send him with an ironing board. Either his roommate will have one or someone in a room near him will. He will also have leave on weekends following the completion of his intensive training cycle (ITC) & he would be able to get anything he needed then. I'd be more than happy to answer any other questions you have!

Congratulations!!! :jump1:

Thank you all so kindly! We are so honored and excited for this new phase.

In the greater scheme of things, having one more year to prep before the Academy (whichever one he chooses) will ultimately make all the difference in the world. This is so much more than we ever could have anticipated- we are so very very fortunate.

Funny thing: in High School he has been a tiger- and that seems to be continuing: he will be a tiger at MMI as well- GO TIGERS!

How do you get a scholarship to MMI? I have heard of some Prep but not sure how you get a scholarship to one. My DS had a nom to usma and usmma. No go on usma and on hold for usmma.

There are bunches the kids can apply for, but this one they just picked him for. The needed some of the things he had to offer. It was a total and complete shock to us!

MMI is a private military prep school- I think you may have been referring to the prep schools each of the SA's offer. We would still be so honored to get a Falcon Foundation, but if not (which is a probably not) he will use this amazing opportunity. For the prep schools offered by the SA's, you can't really apply specifically for them, they nominate you for a position in their own prep schools.

What's great about MMI is there are sponsored cadets from all service academies as well as self preps. They all go through the same program together just some are putting themselves through the program

The academics are impressive at MMI. DS hasd taken college chemistry at the local college previously and he said that this was nothing like the class he took at MMI. It’s actually also a publicly funded school through the state of Alabama and not really a private school.

NMMI is attached to a high school, it's perfect if you want a 13th grade experience with 14 yr olds barking at you.. Yes MMI has a baseball team, from what I understand this year they were very competitive.. Last year one of their former players got drafted by the Angels.

How does it compare to NMMI in new mexico or Greystone in tx? Does MMI have a baseball team?
Depends on what you mean by that. All three provide college credit for their courses (Greystone with an agreement with a local university). However, each have their own personalities. Your best bet start with the web pages for each school, and then contact the admissions counselors.

I have done that with grey stone and nmmi. Just had not thought about MMI as much because of the distance

Is there any must haves that are not on the packing list. It sounded like not to bring a lot with you, but anything that you wish you had or had to buy. A laundry basket? Is not having a car a big deal, is there good transportation?

Not sure what’s on the packing list but when our DS attended, his best purchase was a comfortable blanket. He had a top bunk and slept on top of the bedding due to maintaining the correct bedding measurements/requirements. The air conditioning is always going and even though it’s hot outside it gets pretty chilly in the dorms.

Not a big deal to be without a vehicle. Our son did need one when it came time to drive to the airfield for the Flying Tigers pilot training. Dollar general within walking distance of campus.

Will cadets have time during that first day to go out into Selma for purchasing items or will that have to be done ahead of time (day before) and ready for the first day? Asking bc we are planning to fly in the night before from FL and don’t want to bring bulky items like towels, blankets, iron, etc. May need to adjust flight if we have to shop the night before. Thanks! Also, anyone ever used Amazon and had things shipped directly to MMI?

On check in day it will be very busy. The morning will be spent going through the administrative requirements, and the afternoon will be move in and some initial marching training. Once a student checks in, they will not be allowed off campus. Making a Wal-mart run in Selma the day before may be your best bet.

As far as Amazon, they do deliver! The student mail room accepts deliveries from FedEx, UPS, and USPS, and has an attendant that will sign for deliveries.
