First of all, I had a chance to speak with my wonderful DS for about an hour today before he nearly fell asleep on the phone and just missed him self for a nap! Before signing off, he mentioned that squadron leader ship specifically stated three times not to post anything on social media. I see a lot of pictures on Facebook of the basics in their uniforms and things of this nature. Some parents are wondering was that comment meant for the cadets specifically or for the parents as well. My response was simply was since there is room for interpretation I will err on the side of extreme caution and not post anything. It’s simply not worth the risk IMO. Any feedback or prior knowledge/experience with this one be greatly appreciated.

IMHO, a number of parents do not "filter" their Facebook posts well. Items are posted to group pages that are best to be limited their personal feeds and other items that should not be posted to Facebook at all. I know of cadets who have been extremely embarrassed due to what one if his/her parents posted to one of the parent group pages.

I would always assume that anything you post could make its way back to your DS, other cadets, and/or squadron leadership.

We created "Secret" Facebook Groups for each of our Cadets where friends/family are invited to watch their journey. Even though our personal FB pages are not public, we are very careful about posting on our FB pages. However, on our "Secret" page, we post pics and give more details of their journey. This was especially helpful during their fist year at USAFA.

You cannot always trust even your close friends. I was posting details about BCT to a private blog with a very short list of readers. However, even among my short list of trusted individuals, I discovered that some of the photos have been shared with outsiders. It was a case where a parent felt that she could trust her teenage daughters with being able to view the blog. I had to close the blog. A parent cannot be too careful in this digital age.
