Tear Gas

CaptMJ: we are in agreement. Good to go.

I should have added in, “confidence in wearing the gear right,” but I skipped the obvious, I think because the OP was worried about DS’ experience with the gas itself. I wanted her to get that the military trains to reality, there’s a reason we don’t just read a book or do an online course about some things.

@Devil Doc, report please! You can type while you have your mouth filled with bread, rice or milk.

Though we have veered sharply off tear gas and MommaFalcon’s concern, I will hope that these are not the Nepalese Snakebite chilis, long skinny green or red bumpy peppers. I ate some in Hong Kong once during a port visit, was told they were some kind of green beans, during a festive dinner with shipmates. I could have beaten a Game of Thrones dragon’s best fire-breath. There’s also a milder small globe-shaped one.

As to military culture and lifestyle, for aspiring junior officers here, one of the best aspects of a military career is the broadening of your world view, and your experiences with other cultures/customs/foods/people. I would not trade the places I have been, even the armpits, for anything.

As to the tear gas thing, MommaFalcon can now be assured that her son is now confident he can handle exposure to gases like that, understand what’s happening, know he’ll get through it and retain his composure in a real-life situation. It’s training, training, training that allows military people to sort through what’s happening in volatile situations and come up with a course of action. To wit, Capt Sullenberger landing (not crashing) on the Hudson River. USAFA ‘73. Bet he did tear gas training, and in those days, parents were removed from images of that.

Thanks! That is what I am learning to accept. That they are given these challenges and obstacles on purpose and they’re not supposed to sail through everything with ease. It’s supposed to make them tougher on the other side. You guys of all been great and I really love the hot pepper diversion stories! Makes me laugh [emoji23]

You have at least 9 years of your DS’ stories to look forward to. He will go places, meet people, have experiences of which he will never have dreamed. That may include some pretty crazy chow.

Sadly, It is likely that he won't get to become a Shellback or Bluenose for which stories must be redacted to avert the wrath of Neptunus Rex.

Back when I was a Junior Officer, Candidates for Chief-hood brought a "Defense Counsel" to their initiations and the Defense Counsel was often hasselled and sometimes went through some of the events that were going on. At my first couple of initiations as an Ens, and as a certified wise-ass, I freely wised off to the judge and was given LOTS of "attention". Since at that time, my dad had already had 30 yrs AS A CHIEF (my command did not know) I knew exactly what I was doing and had a very good time doing it. When I finished my ration of truth serum and asked for seconds, I think that they recognized my game.

@OldRetSWO I was initiated on the Mighty Battle Frigate Bowen FF-1079 with only one other first class. The only Os allowed in the hangar were the CO and our division officer as our defense attorney. The other guy was a QM so we had the same DIVO. He didn't know what hit him. The chiefs had their fun and kicked him and the captain out. Then the real initiation started. I haven't been to one since the initiation has been neutered. I still won't divulge what took place that day, even to modern day CPOs. I have the only video of my initiation. The CMC told me to get it copied and bring it back. I didn't. I tried watching it once long ago but it was too painful so I stopped and hit the eject button. It's been in a moving box since.

The Mighty Battle Frigate Bowen? That what you're going with? [emoji23][emoji23]. At least you had someone taking up your slack. I was the only one the year I went to trial. Longest (and most rememberd) day in my life. [emoji3]
