Candidate Visit Weekend 2018

Hello all,

I’ve tried searching through the forum, but couldn’t find anything on this year’s CVW. Has anyone received their invite? If so, have you received confirmation after you filled out your interest form & what days did y’all submit your interest form for?

My DS received his invite CVW invite last week for October.

My DD, a current firstie at USNA, received a CVW invite February her senior year after she had already accepted her appointment. She wanted to go anyway to be there and get away for the night. Interestingly she said one of the other "drags" who was there at the time got her appointment during that CVW. It was actually at a meeting there for all the drags I believe.

Wow, so it's really a lottery who gets one, right? I don't know if I'd be considered a "strong candidate" but I haven't received anything. :< does attending NASS lower your chances of getting one?

I was offered a CVW in July for this September. Had barely started my application for USNA except I did apply (and was denied) to NASS.

No. Getting an invite to a CVW has nothing to do with going to NASS, or not.
Some candidates go to both, and the two are not related.

I have heard about candidates requesting an invite to a CVW after receiving their Offer of Appointment, and then going.
I think that would be the only scenario in which requesting a CVW would get you an invite.

You might be able to request one if you are a recruited athlete, but I have no idea how all that recruited athlete stuff works.

Son's CVW invite date did not work with his HS schedule( tests) so he requested another opportunity to attend a CVW at a later date....Admissions offered him another weekend in the Spring that worked out much better for him.

DD had LOA but no CVW. She called B&G and got one during the coldest February that USNA had experienced in years. It was still a great experience for her. Ask and it may be received.

This was the same for our DS. By the time he went to the CVW, he already had his appointment. He had previously gone to NASS. He then went to USMA for an overnight visit there after he was appointed, as well, before he made his final decision on which appointment he would accept. DD went to NASS, but had been previously invited to CVW her junior year, but did not go to that.

My DS got into NASS but then was injured and could not attend. He then got an invite to CVW and will go next month. We live overseas so he has to fly 14 hours to get there, but he really wants to go and is afraid if he declined the invite, it wouldn't look good.

Declining an invite for a CVW will not hurt anyone. For some it just doesn’t work schedule wise, for others it’s a financial issue. If it can be worked, yes, I would recommend for someone to attend. It’s the best view of what USNA is like day in and day out.

The CVW is not for the academy to evaluate your DS, but for your DS to evaluate the academy. So don’t worry about whether your DS looks good to the academy. Your DS should focus on whether the academy looks good to him. Do what’s best for your family circumstances and his personal decision when the time comes.

In addition to the above post, the difference between CVW and NASS or equivalent Academy Programs is that CVW is experiencing the MIDN life vs Summer Plebe Training. CVW is what sealed the deal for my DS. My DS determined that the Naval Academy offers the best academic, athletic, leadership, Academy club, summer training and travels, and both the Navy and the private sector job experience while as a MIDN. Things he discussed and explored with MIDNs and the Faculty during his CVW program.

After coming back from CVW, he decided Annapolis is where he wants to be, even though he did West Point SLE and USAFASS and Yale NROTC/AFROTC and Harvard/MIT all 3 ROTC Candidate Visit Week. One of his escorts assigned to him during his visit, with 36 on his ACT, turned down Harvard to be a Plebe at the Academy. I think that reinforced his decision. During CVW, you’ll get a good taste of the Academy culture with daily training/Activities and the Academic life.

MY DS is now a very happy Plebe at USNA. One of his Squad mates from his Platoon at West Point SLE is also at USNA. Although at different Companies, they’re so happy to be reunited as MIDNs at Annapolis.

During Plebe Summer, he did Rowing and loved it. He earned his double Sharp Shooter Badges, shy of getting double Expert by 1-2 points down range. He can try to re-qualify through the Combat Arms Club during his Plebe year. He was asked to join the Varsity Pistol and Rifle Teams. After receiving an Appointment, he was recruited into the Navy Varsity Rowing Team through an invitation by the Coach. Never done it in high school, although his high school has the best Crew Team in his County/State in New York, instead he swam in the Varsity Swim Team. He’s starting as the Coxswain for the Heavy Weight Navy Rowing Team. He’s also placed out of few classes. I believe that without the CVW experience, my DS may have faced a dilemma in choosing. If at all possible, I highly recommend CVW to all serious ANNAPOLIS Candidates.

I was offered a weekend this year and I accepted. I am excited and thrilled to go. I did the Coast Guard AIM and Air Force Summer Seminar this past summer.

Good luck to all that are applying to the academies.

Good girl! Go and enjoy!

We had at least 12 (possibly 16) wash out of Plebe Summer this year.
I wish there was data on why they washed out and if those who did, had previously attended a CVW or NASS.

If the attrition happened solely because of injury, that would be good data to have, because I would think it may be easy for some to jump to the conclusion that many of them "couldn't handle the stress" or "missed home too much" or maybe just "realized that this was a mistake".

My DS got a CVW invite at the end of his junior year after a meeting with a local Navy recruiter (the meeting was arranged by his guidance counselor). At that point, he had not filled out any part of the app and had not applied for NASS. The recruiter passed the info up the chain, and DS got his email invite about a week later.

CVW is definitely by invitation only for those select hopefuls and candidates who show promise. But still ALL need to apply for it and express that interest personally. Once invited you accept or decline.

12 wash out is very low. Very very low which demonstrates that Admissions is doing a fantastic job. Certainly no one washes out due to Academics during Plebe Summer. Many, in my judgement, are due to injury. 1-2 went TANGO Company after injury from my DS Company alone. In the Brigade, there are 2 Battalions, 15 Companies, and 30 Platoons. I know few are leaving because of the difficulty of training. I don’t think anyone is let go because you didn’t pass the PRT. 96% passed so those 4% get an F in PE and now have to pass this fall or they can be asked to leave. Usually those who couldn’t pass are injured. Very few cannot pass PRT because they lied on their CFA.

This year is a record year of retention. If this remains throughout the Plebe Year, Admissions may accept less in the 2023 Class.

Hello everyone. I accepted a CVW but had my Band Director tell me that I could not miss any days due to our band being national competitive. I tried working it out with him but he told everyone no college visits this fall or a bad grade will be given.

I was so looking forward to CVW and now disappointed.
