Hello,

My son just started his NROTC orientation today. One question I’ve had for quite sometime is: Outside of list of majors in Tier I & II being different, are there any significant differences between the two? I.e scholarship amount, service commitment etc...?

I’ve been looking for this and haven’t found a clear answer.

If anyone could provide this info or point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

No difference in scholarship amount, stipend amount, service commitment, uniforms, training opportunities, or anything else for that matter. Also no difference with Tier 3 scholarship awardees. Good luck to your DS.

Thanks for the reply.

You know, I wasn’t nervous about him joining, but after reading posts here for the last 1/2 hour, I sure am now! The first thing I learned tonight is we got no real information from the recruiter.

Of all the Google searches I’ve done looking to learn, finding this forum has been the best.

What are you nervous about? If he keeps his nose to the grindstone and gives it his all he'll do great.

You’re right, I shouldn’t worry. He ‘s a superior candidate, 4 yrs of NJROTC (graduated as Senior Chief), 1560 SAT (790 math), 4 years of track and soccer, President of the Physics club too. He went to this specialized STEM HS were ROTC is mandatory.

My DD just took her oath of office yesterday for the Boston Consortium NROTC and left for NSO at Naval Station Newport. I was honestly nervous the whole time she was applying and as we navigated DodMerb and endless documents, but yesterday at that swearing in and the Parent Info session I was nothing but proud, hopeful, and excited for her. FYI, she has a Tier III, (LREC) scholarship, and will be at Tufts, and went into this with no experience (went to a small high school with no access to any ROTC) but she wound up getting an ISR and now we couldn't be happier. It feels like a huge additional recognition of all the work she has put in over the years in school and out, and a chance to use her gifts for good. Just a long way of saying that it's worth it!

Wow, thats pretty coincidental. My son is at Boston College. I bet they met at MIT on the way to Newport. I’m a little bummed they took their phones. I would have liked to have gotten some updates between now and Sunday. The only reason my son is Tier II is because BC doesn’t offer mechanical engineering, so he went Physics instead.

Unrelated, on the swimming part of the PFA, does anyone know what the criteria is? I saw the running part ( 1.5 miles, 11 minutes male, 13 female) but no mention of the swimming criteria.

There's no feeling like it and it continues after they commission. I couldn't believe the changes in my son in one short week. In retrospect I felt like I dropped off a little boy and met a young man afterwards. I'm fortunate that they took a bunch of still pics and put them together into a video that I watch from time to time on YouTube when I'm missing him. Enjoy the ride... it passes too quickly.

I think we did meet your son yesterday. He was the who told my DD when to say "aye sir" and when to say "yes sir." I remember the physics major and BC. Small world. My understanding is that they just do the third class tests in Newport and then if people do well or seem experienced enough have them do the 2nd class (which is the 45o meter, or something like that) to give them the chance to get it done early. They did not mention any time requirements on the 3rd class.

In HS, they got graded on all that stuff. Uniforms, haircut length, everything. He’s just been off for the summer and shaving seemed to be optional.

I just finished NSO at Purdue. Swimming isn't a part of the PFA. There is a third class swim qualification though. Best of luck to all of your DDs and DSs during NSO!

Thanks.

Remember this is all new to me so please indulge me on a really dumb question. What to DD and DS stand for?

Of course, on any given day, there could be some other meanings for those acronyms. ;)

Thanks.

Dear Son. Dear Daughter. Dear Wife. Dear Husband.

Hie thee over to The Acronym List in Community Information, before you become stunned and insensible to being 3q’ed or DQ’ed in the Land of DODMERB while mired in PROTRAMID, CORTRAMID, PS, PPW, BCT, SA, SF-86, PTR, PFT, CFA...

Ouch, that gives me a headache.

I was up at mit on Monday as well. PFA was completed at MIT, on Monday. I think there is a second go later in the week.

The swim portion is taken in Newport.
From the presentation slide
Abandon ship drill (jump in?)
Tread water 5 mins
Prone float 5 mins
Swim 50 yard any stroke
Clothing inflation

I think they’ll be wetter after the uss buttercup.

I can’t wait to hear how it all goes. I did get a text from my daughter Monday night...requesting insurance card info, no chitchat.
