Annapolis Restaurants/Where To Eat 2016/ I-Day CVW Visit Graduation PPW

Ok, I am starting to see the annual rounds of where-to-eat-Annapolis-during-CVW/visit/I-Day etc., so I am creating a fresh thread with an easily searchable title. There are dozens of posts stashed in various threads, but not necessarily obvious. There was recently a great string of posts about breakfast places, in a Patriot League Swimming thread. Since sometimes I am great at remembering where these posts are, or search well, and sometimes not, I will just go for the pile into the bus approach.

I started a "Hotels Annapolis" and "USNA Parents Club" threads with the same approach, so with any luck they will pop up with logical search terms.

Some of these are on Open Table. Given the reverence paid to crab in this area, whether crab cake or crab bisque or whatever stuffed with crab, assume the crab items are good. A restaurant quickly fails if it doesn't do crab well. Most will have websites for further research. There are A LOT of choices. I have used a rough geographical approach. I look forward to all the posts. I live here, and always enjoy trying a place I have overlooked.

To seed the thread with a few choices in each area:

ON THE YARD.

Drydock, in Dahlgren Hall.
Grill and snack bar open to public. Good basics much cheaper than outside the gates.

Club.
Lunch and brunch, some dinners. Not sure what rules are for using. I am usually there for wedding/funeral receptions.

DTA (DOWNTOWN ANNAPOLIS):

Iron Rooster.
Universal favorite, just a few years in DTA, beloved by locals, visitors and mids. American comfort food done with style and quality. All-day breakfast. House-made pop tarts. Don't ask. Just go.

Buddy's Crabs and Ribs.
Perennial brunch favorite for lots of food and cheaper end of the spectrum.

Federal House.
Good all-around restaurant.

McGarvey's.
Raw bar for those who like it. Long-time Annapolis watering hole for boat people. Good all-around menu.

Middleton's.
Colonial tavern, more upscale menu.

Chick 'N' Ruth's Delly. (they spell it that way)
Annapolis institution. An experience.

Potato Valley.
On State Circle. Hole in the wall for lunch, serving huge baked potatoes with a wide range of toppings that make it a meal.

Pusser's Tavern.
Marriott Hotel restaurant on the water. Typical pricey hotel food, but for a drink on the water and an appetizer, a block to check. There's just something about having a Dark and Stormy on the deck on a summer evening looking out at the boats at anchor that I have to do every so often with DH.

Galway Bay
Castle Bay
the Irish pubs.

Reynolds Tavern.
Another Colonial setting, on Church Circle. Known for afternoon tea and nice dinners.

The Big Cheese.
Well-known for great take-out sandwiches, "Best in Annapolis" for years running. A bit expensive but worth it. Take-out only. You can set up a charge account for your mids. You pay. They eat. "The Annapolitan" - crusty roll from Baltimore's Little Italy, melted Brie, sliced Granny Smith apples. Mmmm

UPTOWN ANNAPOLIS. Along West St. from State Circle to the Spa Road Circle near the Westin.

Ram's Head Tavern.
Micro-brewery gastro pub. A local favorite. Good all-round menu.

Level.
Small plates, very good food.

Red, Red Wine Bar.
Good food too.

Lemongrass.
Thai. Very popular.

Fadò.
Irish pub chain.

Miss Shirley's.
A breakfast/lunch favorite to rival Iron Rooster. Started in Baltimore.

MALL AREA. Includes Westfield Shoppingtown Annapolis ("Annapolis Mall") , the Festival at Riva and The Shops at Parole.

Most of the major chains at every price point.

GREATER ANNAPOLIS AND SURROUNDS.

Cantler's.
Perennial favorite of generations of locals, mids, alumni. Classic crab deck on the water. No reservations. Tuck your napkin around your neck, spread out the butcher paper, grab your crab mallet, and get cracking. All crab decks have burgers, sandwiches, seafood in season, other stuff.

Deep Creek Cafe.
Similar to Cantler's, crab deck on the water. In Arnold.

Mike's on the South River.
Technically in Riva. Another classic old-school crab deck.

Severn Inn.
Upscale place across the water on the Severn River, great view of USNA. Seafood.

Pa Dutch Market, or Amish Market, as most locals call it.
A market co-op only open Thurs, Fri, Sat, run by Amish families from PA. Everything homemade. Eat breakfast, lunch or dinner in the small cafe. Get a just made pretzel wrapped around a sausage or hot dog to eat while wandering around looking at the baked goods (made on premises in an open bakery), produce, pickles and jams, and the meat counters. Always jammed on Sat AM. We love it. Our visitors love it.

Chris' Charcoal Pit.
Hole-in-the-wall in strip mall with Greek food. Many Greek families in Annapolis from the fishing and boating industries going back to the 1800's. West St.

Paul's Homewood Cafe.
Nice Greek restaurant, local favorite. West St.

Giolitti's Deli.
Near Shops at Parole, off West St. My favorite Italian deli for subs on homemade rolls, and hand made pasta. Take out or eat there. Been there for 20+ years.

Mission BBQ.
Local chain spreading rapidly. BBQ is always a source of controversy, as it should be. Dedicated to armed forces and first responders.

Double T Diner.
West St. Starving? Weird time of day? Want breakfast food? Everybody wants something different? Classic diner with massive menu. Open 24 hours.

EASTPORT.
Across the tiny bridge near the Marriott.

Chart House.
A personal favorite. Located in an historic boathouse that built PT boats during WW II. Upscale steak and seafood chain with killer views across the Annapolis Harbor to USNA.

Carrol's Creek Cafe.
Views. Upscale. Seafood.

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. The chain.

Lewnes' Steakhouse.
An Annapolis original, same scale as Ruth's, but with been-there-forever charm. Go at least once, to celebrate something.

Over to you!
I don't exactly know how to spell the restaurant name but it is called "Chick n' ruths" it is an awesome restaurant. They have a milkshake and burger challenge that midshipmen try to complete.

Dry Dock in Dhalgren is quick and cheap and the food is good. We have used the Club twice and made reservations as parents. They do have a dress code so check it out (no shorts and no shirts without collar). All of the above recommendations sound great. It will take you all four years to visit even half of them. Another cheap one with good lunch is Cheeseburger/ Cheeseburger out by the Mall. Wife loved it and I think we went every year.

It's in the Big List!

CheeburgerCheeburger is in the burger section. It's in the Riva Festival shopping center, along with Panera.

Sofi's

IMG_4165.JPG

S'mores Crepe

Lunch at Main & Market

IMG_4157.JPG

We split "The Masterpiece" (a Monte Cristo style sandwich with a savory twist). Get one soon, it's going on hiatus in July.

IMG_4158.JPG

Crab Dip (very cheesy in a good way).

IMG_4159.JPG

Fish Tacos (+1 since the fish isn't battered and deep fried).

The Dessert Case. We'll be back to sample a slice of the Butterfinger.

Just returned from a 3 day getaway for the 4th in Annapolis. Did hit a lot on the list. This is jmpo. Sorry if I am repeating anybody's reviews.
Best restaurant overall was Carol's. $$$$$
~ Food is outstanding, and portions are huge, view is amazing, ambience is great. However, expect the bill not to be cheap. Worth every penny. I decide to go with 2 small plates, thinking they were appetizer size. (lamb as appetizer and the 2nd was a seafood salad with lump crab, scallops and shrimp over wilted spinach starter as my main). I could not finish the salad.
~~ Did also go to Chart House. $$$$ It is very modern inside despite it's appearance outside. Again, expensive. Again, the sizes are huge. The starter Caesar salad is basically a meal upon itself. Chart House has been purchased by a company that also own McCormick and Schmidts. Their prime rib definitely tastes like it is their recipe. It was very good.
Favorite Restaurant for relaxing was Middleton Tavern. $$$
~ We are people watchers. They have a large covered front port. We went there for an early lunch @12 on the 4th so there were a lot of people to watch. It is 2 doors down from Iron Rooster and around the corner from Sofi's. Bullet did the Oysters on the 1/2 shell and loved every 2nd. I did the fish and chips. The fries were ehhh, but the fish was delicious. Not greasy/oily, and the fish was very flaky. I love tartar sauce, and always ask for extra to dunk my fries in, besides using it with the fish. I did not use it on the fish at all. It was seasoned so well that all I did was squeeze lemon juice on it and went to heaven.

Notables.
~ Sofi's. The crepes are great. The service was perfect. They get a nod from me for customer service. Seeing how large the crepes were I asked is there a kids size? They said NOPE, but they had no problem splitting in 1/2 and wrapping my other 1/2 to go.
~ Kilwins. Great ice cream. Bullet will probably tell you that if you want to do the waffle cone, do it in the bowl. That was our mistake. It was so busy there and only few seats outside that we decided to walk and eat. It took a solid 5-10 minutes to finish the darn thing. We purchased fudge and sea water taffy to bring home.
~ Iron Rooster. Yes, the pop tart is amazing. But just like ALL of the other restaurants in the area their portion sizes are insanely large. Bullet and I at maybe 1/2 of the pop tart (did the berry), I had the angry omelet, and could only eat 1/3rd of the meal before I pushed the plate away. It was very good, but I never expected the size of both the pop tart and the omelet to be that large.
~ Chick N Ruths. I got the Rueben and Bullet got the crab lump cake sandwich. AGAIN...OMG this town does not know portion control. IMPO, being from NY/NJ area I do have a regret. I noticed sitting next to us a couple that ordered pickles, did not know that they don't come with the meal...you know what ASSUME means, being a NY/NJ person I ASSUMED they came with the meal. Had I known it was not a side I wouldn't have ordered the onion rings. The onion rings are great, but I would have preferred the pickles after seeing them.

All and all, I would say that the restaurants in Annapolis are finely tuned businesses. They are use to the amazing sizes of people coming in during certain times, i.e I Day, PPW, etc. From all of the businesses that we visited, they all said that believe it or not I Day is not their busiest, but the 4th is. I don't think we waited at any establishment more than 5 mins. Than again it was only 2 of us, so I am sure it was easier to get seated, plus we planned our day out.
~ IE 4th of July went to Iron Rooster at 7:30/7:45 a.m. for breakfast. Noon at Middleton. 4:00 for Sofi's. 8:00 Carol's. Carol's was the questionable 1 since we booked it to watch the fireworks at the restaurant. Our waitress even stated that on weekends like this, I Day, Commissioning week they expect to not turn the tables over fast.

Going off the track now, but here are things that I found I loved and didn't know. Annapolis is a dog friendly town. Bullet and I laughed on our 2nd day when we decided to count how many dogs we saw compared to how many kids (4 and under), in the end it was about 3 dogs to every 1 stroller we saw. Every restaurant/store had dog bowls with water and milk bones outside the entry. Might have been that it was the 4th, but we laughed because it reminded us of the UK pubs...dogs welcomed.
~ Gibson Lodge.
~~ This is a B & B. Their property is attached to the Barry Gate, around the corner from Sofi's and Iron Rooster. To get onto USNA if you walk really really really slow it will take you 3 mins. I can't speak enough volumes about this place. They only have @24 rooms. It is 3 buildings within the property, which is family owned. They have a private parking lot for only their lodgers. They stock their common area kitchens with Keurig coffee, sodas, water, chips, cookies, candy. Breakfast includes everything, but eggs, including make your own waffles.
~~~ If you talk to them they will give you the off the beaten track path to explore Annapolis within walking distance.
~Paws.
~~ If you own a cat or dog you want to stop by there. It is not a tourist trap. Their items are very unique. We purchased a lot there. The home made HUGE dog cookies were @$2.25. The garden flag was only $16, basically the same price as Lowes. Many of their garden flags are Americana or military with dog breeds on them. The townies bring in their dogs into the store.
~~~ If you stay at Gibson Lodge, take the Paws bag to your room 1st because the innkeepers dog, Pippa (border collie) works with her and she can smell Paws as soon as you walk into the lobby and as a dog owner you will feel guilty if you do not treat her.
~ Water Taxi
~~ They are the best. We took them twice (Chart House and Carol's) They also do the 2 big cruise boats (Gilligan's Island 3 hr tour). The taxi ride that goes across to the restaurants from DTA is $3 pp cost, plus tip if you want. They will give you little tidbits for the 5 minute ride. They run quite frequently to these establishments.

There is my novella as an AF wife visiting a Navy town!

Food related: IMO a must do first trip away from the hotel room, B&B, Air BB, should involve a stop at Whole Foods (there is one at the large Mall in Annapolis).

The look of "contented- joyus- confusion on there faces as they wander through the place in "happy-shock" trying to decide what they want to eat most is more than worth the trip.

I always love this thread ..so many good places to eat (and drink) in Annapolis. I can tell you though, this is far better for the grads and parents than the Midshipmen. Not sure what they are paying the Midn these days, but back in the day, Timmy's (right outside of Gate 3) had pizza and beer cheap, Chick & Ruth's was a staple, and Storm Bro's ice cream was a weekly visit. Alway took my gf (now wife) to Middleton Tavern when she visited (and we still go at least once a visit).

I'm curious whether anyone has a review of Chesapeake Brewery ...owned by an '85 Classmate and home to the Beat Army bar. Its on West Street up near the Loews and Westin....I haven't been in town since it opened but on the list for the next visit.

Naval Bagels.
Taylor Ave. across from stadium. Breakfast and lunch. To go or eat in, bagels all kinds of ways. Meet most of Annapolis here at some point.

Bagels And...
West St. Same thing. Used to be owned by same person. No longer, but essentially same menu.

Old Stein Inn.
In Edgewater. Pleasant out of the way beer garden restaurant with decent schnitzel. When you're tired of crab!

NAVY Bagel just outside Gate 8 in the grocery shopping plaza for casual b-fast or lunch. (609 Taylor St, Annapolis MD) Yum!
https://navalbagelsinc.com/

We had a quick visit to Annapolis this past weekend. Bella Italia had great take-out; the Mid group we bought for chowed down and said they order from there all the time. Their pizza selection in the cases look really good too....right next to Naval Bagels near gate 8.

The Point Crabhouse and Grill on Mill Creek Rd in Arnold. Waterfront on the Magothy River.

Baked Lump Crab Dip in a Brioche Bread Bowl with Warm Soft Pretzels = Unbelievable Tastiness

I can’t wait to go back!

Flamant. For your foodie moments. A block over from Naval Bagels in West Annapolis, in an old bungalow. Just tried it last week. Very good.

Preserve. Another newer one on the Naptown dining scene.

And - CheeBurger has completed its renovations and re-opened. In the Festival at Riva Center, the groups of shops and restaurants across from Parole Center (Target).

There isn’t one in Naptown, but for non-East Coasters, it’s worth the trip to Baltimore or DC: Shake Shack! Yes, it is all that! At some point, they have to put one in Naptown, no?

My Baltimore office is adjacent to Cheesecake Factory, across from Shake Shack, Chick Fil A, Capital Grill and Fogo de Chao, and around the corner, Miss Shirley’s! Whee!
