Does anyone know how the merchant marines have done with the federal budget? Anyone have any details?

A press release sent out by the superintendent,

Last week the Congress passed and President Trump signed into law an omnibus spending bill to fully fund the US Government for Fiscal Year 2018. Congress appropriated $121 million for the Academy, a substantial increase over the $83.2 million enacted for FY 17.

The funding for Facilities Maintenance, Repair, and Equipment program rose from $3 million to $7 million. This will allow us to provide better maintenance of current Academy facilities.

The Capital Improvements Program accounts for most of the increase, going from $11.2 million to $45 million. With this increase in funding we will be able to accelerate our long term program for renovating and upgrading the Academy’s buildings and infrastructure.

The FY 18 enacted budget is very generous for the Academy and is the strongest evidence one can see of the Federal Government’s long-term commitment to USMMA’s future. These increases came at just the right time as we can account for them as we finalize the Academy’s new Strategic Plan for 2018-2023.

Over the coming weeks, the Academy staff will be working to upgrade our budget plans in light of the additional funding we have available. As these plans come together, we will share them with the Academy community.

BE KP!
