4th Class Answering Questions

Thanks for being clear and concise. That is the explanation I was looking for. Not just aiming for the minimum but what is the expectation to keep you off probation. I appreciate the time you took to respond.

You’re welcome! Glad to help!

Can cadets leave their stuffs in their dorms year round or do they have clear out on extend leaves or during the summer?

(Again, when I was there) All cadets change rooms every semester, as well as roommates for the most part. In the summer, you pack all of your stuff up and haul it up to the “attic” where the trunk room is located and store your belongings. Of course, you still bring a decent amount of stuff to summer training but it’s certainly a process having 1,000 cadets move that often in one building. You get creative about how you do it.

You only have to clear out during the summer. We're issued trunks (Harry Potter style) and there is space, creatively named the Trunk Room, where we can store our trunks. Most everything will fit in those, so it doesn't have to go home. As a side note, except for the lucky few who manage to stay in the same room from the previous semester, most everyone will change rooms every semester.

Didn't see that you had already answered this! Creative is a good word, to say the least.

@ekb1398 Do people still swap drawers and use their desk chairs? I also seem to remember longboards being very useful.
Yes! Draws are swapped, in the new annexes where the closet bars are removable, those are swapped, trunks are carried around on dollies but if there are no dollies available then longboards or desk chairs do the trick.

We got yelled at for using chairs (because it could damage the chairs). We would use poles (I think mop/broom) hook hangers from them and walk with them on your roommates shoulder to the new room.

My DD was fortunate to receive a LOA and plans to attend. I am wondering if the roommate she has during swab summer with be her first semester roommate. And do cadets have any input as to roommates or is it randomized. Thank you.

Just curious ... is there any interaction between USCGA cadets and students at Connecticut College nearby ? My daughter graduated from Connecticut College a few years ago, and whenever I asked her if she ever had any interaction with the Coast Guard cadets, she always laughed about how the Cadets would walk through the campus in little packs , but she didn't know anyone that associated with them. Seemed a little strange to me.

During swab summer they change their roommates every week and they do not get a choice of who it is. They also do not get a say for the 4C year either. They will have one roommate for the 1st semester and a new one for the 2nd semester. At the end of the 4C year they will find out their new company. Then they can put in a request of who they would like to room with for the 1st semester of their 3C year. Roommates change for the 2nd semester of 3C year also.

Our son is at USCGA now and no they do not interact with Conn college. I know they go over there to watch hockey games etc but that is about it as far as I know.

She will have roommates changed during swab summer every couple of weeks. Roommates are changed every semester during the first year. Very little “input” into anything the first year.

My DS sometimes trains on the campus of Connecticut college with his USCGA Sandhurst squad. However I haven’t heard of any interaction between students.

Very little interaction. A very few cadets who validated courses have later taken classes at Conn later which were not offered at CGA. Interaction at the Conn College hockey game tends to be raucous, rowdy and loud.

do you choose roommates/ fill out a questionnaire to be matched with similar people or are roommates just assigned?

Read post #31 above to find your answer. They request a roommate for 3C year onwards.

Depending on company, roommate requests are allowed as early as first semester although that's rare - most allow for roommate choices second semester of 4/c year.

Our DS is there now and NO they did not allow them to request roommates at all during 4C year. He is a 3C and they all got to have a "request sheet" for their roommates for the first semester. They will have to put in another request for next semester as well. This is done for each semester starting with 3C year.

I'm well aware, seeing as how I too am a 3/c here in New London as I type this. While that may have been your DS's experience, I can personally guarantee you that some companies do allow it, as I chose my roommate last semester.
