If you are a 4 year scholarship, when does your commitment go into effect? I have heard sophmore year? if you don`t like how the first year goes, can you drop the rotc scholarship with no penalty or commitment of service?

For AROTC scholarship winners - either 3-year or 4-year - the service/repayment commitment goes into effect the first day of your sophomore (MS2) year. If you drop after that date, the Army will decide which it is. In recent years, repayment seems to have been the Army's choice. This means the deeper you go into ROTC, the greater your financial obligation if you drop or are kicked out.

I believe the link below is for the current form of the scholarship contract you will sign. Note that the contract says "after the first day of your MS2 year", or words to that effect, but I sure wouldn't cut it that close.

Same for NROTC. No commitment if you drop before you start you sophomore year.
