Letter of Assurance Question

I received a Letter of Assurance last week for USMA Admissions. It’s a high likelihood that I will be appointed to the prep school, since I don’t have the most competitive ACT scores. In the letter it stated that I have a reserved cadetship for the class of 2023. Does this mean that if I’m appointed to West Point after going to the prep school for a year I’ll be a Yuk instead of a Pleb? And also, if I somehow were to get a higher ACT or SAT score, can I get appointed to West Point automatically?

If they gave you an LOA why do you think you will go to the prep school? What does the LOA say you still need? Nomination, pass dodmerb, pass cfa?

USMA looks at the “whole you.” Something weaker may be balanced by something stronger. An LOA is a reserved seat in the next incoming class, provided you meet all the LOA requirements, and remain eligible in every other way.

Prep is exactly that - a year of prep to polish skills before entering as a plebe. No one gets to skip the bliss of plebe year!

The LOA says I just have to be physically qualified, complete my file, and receive a nomination. My file is all complete besides the CFA.

I thought I was going to have to go to the prep school because I have really low ACT scores.

Well low is subjective but low or not they must like what they see so as long as you pass the cfa, stay healthy and get a nomination you will have a spot in the class of 2023. No prep school. Congrats!

Low scores doesn't get anyone into prep school. When coming straight from high school it takes being academically unqualified to get prep school. Obviously they feel you are academically qualified if they are reserving a seat in the next class for you.

If your SAT's were in line with their baseline you are good to go. Here is a guide for admissions profiles. Hard data really. Where do you fall? How many categories can you highlight? Best of luck.

Should there be concern if there is no official correspondence on the portal yet. Last year my DD received a LOE and was 3qd, she is currently at a prep school and is told that her application is competitive, however there is no correspondence from her admissions team as of yet.

I have an LOA and I have no correspondence on my portal yet. I wouldn’t stress over it.

The LOA is a Conditional Offer of Appointment. This means that if you meet the conditions of the LOA (Physically Qualified, Completed Application, Nomination) then you will be offered an appointment to the USMA.

That's it. Satisfy those conditions, and you're in.

@prospective2019, Are you a recruited athlete?
BTW, I saw your message about your over-night visit experience. My DS was there last week for over-night visit and came back very excited and resolute to attend the West Point.

I am not a recruited athlete, no. Glad your son had a good experience!

@Proudteachermom Your prepster should complete her packet--and is certainly receiving the advice and guidance to do so. The prepsters generally don't get accepted until late in the game--and usually as a batch. So, focus on the nomination and the complete packet--and doing her level best in her classes and PT. The rest will come--but it is not at all the same like for everyone else. It is truly a marathon. Keep faith.
@Yankee23 If you have an LOA, then finish your packet and get your nom. You don't get to say what is a good ACT score. Look at the class profiles. Someone is at the bottom of that range of scores. Maybe it is you? You will have to work hard--but clearly WP Admissions thinks you have what the Army needs. Now get in there and kick it at the CFA and at your nomination interviews.

I now have my nom and my 3Q letter. Now I just have to wait to hit “accept” when it pops up in my portal.

Yes! And it may not be until the jig wave in January. Congratulations. Keep working out! Enjoy your senior year.

Last year DS was at MMI, they all received their appointments together on Feb 7th.. It is very, very early in the process. Make sure all the boxes on the portal have green checks then unfortunately all you can do is wait..
