My DS has applied to USNA, USAFA, NROTC and AFROTC And USCGA.

He has a Congressional Nom and ALO interview pending.he has visited and met with ROTC at several Colleges he is applying to.

He does not have any official Fitness test results completed.

What is the process to schedule these multiple fitness tests?
Gym teacher, BGO? Any feedback and/or personal experience would be appreciated. Hi

For ARTOC, my son's XC coach did it. For SAs, the PE teacher did it as a coach isn't permitted to be the administrator.

Every scholarship and SA has its own rules of who can administer the tests. Follow the instructions closely as they can change year to year. It’s easy enough to find the instructions with a quick google search or their respective primary sites. The SAs try to align on these tests, but ensure to read them closely as USMA at one point had a video requirement, while the others did not. Also don’t wait until the last second. We see excuses galore on this board about waiting until the day before it’s due and it snowed or they got sick so they didn’t do as well as they hoped. That means they didn’t prepare well enough or at all. Practice with test like conditions as doing them in order impacts the body. Good luck!

My DS did the assessment for USNA at NASS, for AFROTC it was his PE teacher, and for USAFA and NROTC it was a senior Navy officer (non recruiter).

Went to USNA, became a Marine. Never stepped foot on a ship outside loading container ships for deployments. I get the statement, I really do, but for those lurking and thinking about SAs... do your homework and ask questions.

We just won’t mention the Army fleet ;)

Honestly, ds has wanted to do Army for some time. My sister convinced him to apply USAFA as well because she lives there, otherwise he would have only done USMA and AROTC as plan b. As it stands, if he were to get an appointment to USAFA and not USMA, he’s not 100% certain he will accept USAFA. We just aren’t worrying about that right now. Long way to go still!

Thank you for all the replies. I feel It would be unfair to ask someone to administer more than I ( or possible 2) of the Fitness tests. Since he needs to take 4 , I was looking on feedback on how other applicants may have approached this.

Four? Isn’t it just two — one for SAs, one for ROTC? Might want to double-check this...and save DS’s energy.

There CAN be actually FIVE fitness tests for a single candidate.
  • CFA for four of the SA's. (USMMA, USNA, USMA and USAFA)
  • NROTC: NROTC Applicant Fitness Assessment (AFA) or NROTC/MO - Marine Corps PFT. (Generally cannot apply for both)
  • AROTC/ Army: APFT(2-2-2) or PFT (1-1-1)
  • AFROTC PFT
  • USCGA PFE

I think you can get it down to 3, if NROTC takes the USNA/USAFA CFA:

1) USNA and USAFA should be transferable. My DD got her CFA done at USMA SLE and got sent to and accepted by USNA and USAFA.
2) AFROTC is 1.5 mile (vs 1 mile with the SA CFA) with 1-minute sit-ups and push-ups
3) USCGA PFE is different than AFROTC, USNA, and USAFA, so that requires another iteration

My DS completed his CFA (for the academies - USMA, USNA and USAFA) and PFA (for the ROTC). Here is what we learned thru this process:
  • As @MidCakePa indicated, you need to take only 2 tests and both of them can be administered by the school PE teacher.
  • For CFA, most important point to note is that follow the USAFA's CFA guidelines. If you meet the AF "average" scores you are more than safe for all other service academies. In a way, USAFA is a common denominator for all. Saying that, their latest average standard is:
    • BB Throw: 69, Pull-ups: 12, Shuttle run: 8.1, Sit-ups: 81, Push-ups: 62, Mile run: 6.29
  • Similarly, your DS can do PFA for the ROTC. I'm sure he MUST do CFA and PFA on two different days. For PFA, he need to do only Push Ups, Sit-ups and 1.5 mile run.
  • He should do CFA first then PFA. Since he will be better prepared to do PFA after doing CFA, in my opinion.
  • As I understand, @sabrescoutmom, your DS is not applying to USMA, so no need to record. But, just to be on the safe side, I will still record Pull-ups and Push-ups anyway. Record them separately.
Good Luck ...

How would you do 1 test for AROTC and AFROTC? AROTC is a 1-mile run. AFROTC is a 1.5 mile run.

If rest of test is identical then just clock the 1 Mile time and finish the 1.5 miles

I believe that’s what my DD did: noted the 1-mile split as part of the 1.5-mile run. It was slower than if she’d done the 1-mile run by itself, but good enough.

DS did two separate tests for AF and Army for that very reason. He wanted to make sure he got the best possible score for Army, particularly since he knew running could be the weakest part of his test.

DS's test for USNA was administrated at NASS; the NROTC test by his volleyball coach. Unless the candidate "maxes" out, the test is really just a pass/fail and to give the candidate an idea of where they are at physically and how much they need to prepare.
