NROTC- when do applications open?

I have a current high school junior who is interested in applying for an NROTC scholarship (possible Marine Option). When does that application open for kids graduating high school in the Class of 2020? Is there any advantage to applying as soon as it opens or is it better to wait? I am not sure he will even know where he wants to apply by that point.

My husband did ROTC back in the 90's, and the process is so different now. Can anyone give me a basic rundown on the process?

Thanks.

The application opens in the Spring of your Junior year. According to past posts on this forum, the earlier you complete your application, the better.

Lots of information can be found here:

I can’t share much wisdom, I’m in the same boat as your child, I’ll be competing for the same scholarship, if he or she decides Marines. Best of luck to your child, I wish them success!!
