My DS received an email that said "Based on a review of your application and academic record, you have been designated as a "Competitive Applicant". It the goes on to talk about Dodmerb, which he has already been qualified through for the Naval Academy.

Does anyone know what "Based on a review of your application and academic record, you have been
designated as a "Competitive Applicant" means"?

Someone will have a better answer for you, but essentially it means “you’re in the running”. Our DS received the same last fall and was very fortunate to receive the 4-year scholarship... in the last days of April. Well after 4/15, and after all college admissions decisions had come back. It is no guarantee, just a positive feedback that you’re not out. Now, that was last year, and things change...

May I ask who the email came from? We did not receive a "Competitive Applicant" email and application status remains in the "No Decision has been made...". Wondering what % of the ultimate scholarship recipients actually get this email and whether the fact that we did not get it is a good indication that he is not likely to get the scholarship.

I applied last year and did not get that email, still got a scholarship in the last days of April. I don't know if getting the email is an indicator of getting a scholarship, but not getting one definitely does not mean that you aren't going to get a scholarship.

The email came from the candidate guidance office. After seeing the replies here and talking to some other folks, the best I can say about this letter is that it is not a rejection letter. Other than that, there are folks who have received the letter and not gotten a scholarship and those that have. In all cases, it seems like a long wait though !

I remember reading a forum members response last year to keep in mind: boards meet, and review however many packets they can In that amount of time. The remaining packets go to the pile that’s looked at next Board meeting. Point being, you may be on the ‘bottom of the pile’, and not looked at yet. That’s one thing about the NROTC process I recall.

DS didn’t receiver that email. He only had the status of ‘under review, no decision ‘ in his application status online. One day he had a congrats email, around November last year. Checked his status, and he had his award.

Best of luck to all. I I remember how exciting it all was last year! It’s great to have your applications completed and submitted early!!

My son received exactly the same email and has also already completed DoDMERB. His status on the portal still reads no decision has been made but I am hoping this means he is being considered and that we will hear something soon.

DS received similar email this morning. Is this email triggered by the board's review or is it something triggered before the board sees it?

EDIT: Here is my suspicion (based on the above responses and nothing else, so it could very well be wrong): application was reviewed by the board. They liked it but not enough to offer scholarship on the spot. Instead, it was put in a "to be considered when we get more applications reviewed" pile for later racking and stacking (i.e. when a more complete picture of the applicant pool emerges). Hence, waiting until April time frame to find out.

Does that sound right?

@ders_dad That's essentially what it amounts to. They actually may or may not like it, but the applicant is qualified and therefore not disqualified on the spot. There is always hope until April. Of course one may not wait until April and could hear a positive response much sooner, since there are frequent NROTC (Navy option) boards.

Good point. However, it suggests the meeting of some minimum set of standards (which there are, I guess) for key metrics (ACT?SAT, rank, PFT, etc.). This does beg the point, why don't all applicants who meet the qualifications receive similar emails (maybe they do?)? I guess it's like almost all SA/ROTC processes - impossible to divine, easy to speculate on, and almost always not worth the skull sweat to do so. I suspect because it is out of "our" hands, we (parents and applicants) feel a sense of helplessness that we are often not used to.

DS submitted his packet in late August and has not gotten the e-mail. Site still says no decision has been made. I assume he has not been boarded yet.

And the wait continues.....

I just noticed that cp5 and militarymomcpg (who received emails last Friday, a week ago), both posted receiving NROTC scholarships the following Monday.

Yes, my DS received the NROTC award about 3 days after receiving the "competitive applicant" email. That said, I've heard from lots of folks who received same letter in years past and didn't hear anything 'til April, and some who didn't receive letter at all and still received scholarship. I really think it's impossible to read the tea leaves. We are going through same thing with USNA, DS is 3q'd and starting nomination interviews, best I can figure out is that when you get to this stage in a competitive district (and assuming het gets a nomination) my DS's odds of getting an appointment rise to an astounding 10% chance for USNA, so he's thrilled about the NROTC.

This process is a true test of one’s (actually an entire family’s) ability to stay calm and patient, and have a plan A, B and C....

Our DS is pursuing USNA, NROTC and alternate schools.... (even discussing what classes to take in NROTC and plan C schools should DS need to reapply to USNA (DS’ numero uno, solidified by attending CVW last month)...

It’s amazing to even be a part of the process.

Best to all
