I am a parent of a freshman who is participating AROTC. He is seeking a campus based scholarship and went through campus board interview recently. What is the typical time frame for the board decision to move forward to HQ level?

Would it be a good idea to inquire the status to PMS by cadet (and/or parent)? or is it even adequate? Should we just wait and see how it goes?

Your son will come to realize that with the Army, "Typical time frame" is anything but typical. The best he can do is keep in touch with his Cadre and wait. Things always seem to take longer then expected.

Best of luck

Welcome to the wonderful world of hurry up and wait

They'll tell him when there is news. I wouldn't make any special effort to contact the cadre, I would simply ask if there was any news as part of a normal conversation or counseling session.

Agree with all above. When there is news to report, he will be told. My DD’s freshman year everyone heard right away, the end of October I believe. Her sophomore year, a friend of hers still didn’t know at Christmas break and had been told that recommendations had been made to brigade but the budget had not been approved yet. Each year is different.

Agree with the others.

I have said nothing to any of the cadre all four years my DS was in ROTC, and that's the way it should be (although I still gotta make it to next May and commissioning ).

We just boarded 8 freshmen tonight. Chances are good that none of them will see an offer this semester. Being boarded means nothing more than the Cadet is now on an order of merit list. Chances are there are currently no offers to be made and thus your Cadet needs to wait. Each Brigade does things a little differently, So your Cadet may be competing for an actual scholarship, but I’d be surprised if that is the case.

My DS interviewed last week and received his conditional offer (pending successful medical) today. I was highly surprised by the quickness of the process.

Does it mean that each Brigade's funding release date could be different?

We have been communicating with ROO over the summer and he arranged medical exam before school starts. Before board interview, my DS already received the DODMERB qualified letter. I have no idea whether it helps or not though.

Congrats to your DS.

is it a state school? or private?
is the offer coming from school battalion? or Brigade level?
is it 3yr? 2yr? or 3.5 yr?

Thank you!
It's at the University of Akron. He applied for 3 year but they gave him 3.5 years. As far as the other questions go, I honestly don't know.... as embarrassed as I am in admitting that. I know it is specific for the University of Akron only if that tells you anything. I need to really learn more about how these things work I guess....

We are in the process of trying to figure out how this impacts the other scholarships (merit based) he has been awarded already. We are hoping since the ROTC scholarship is for tuition only, that they will apply the other scholarships to room and board but my guess is that is only wishful thinking.

Campus based offers are always going to be “from the Battalion” using money allocated by the Brigade, and ultimately by Cadet Command, so Battalion vs Brigade level isn’t really a thing. And not knowing the exact process shouldn’t be embarrassing...there are ROOs who don’t understand the process. Some programs are going to be very proactive, holding regular boards and starting the qualifying process (DODMERB, etc.) earlier, and some programs are going to be very reactive and only start sorting their Cadets and queuing them up after money trickles down. The proactive programs usually get to spend someone else’s money after they spend their own because they always have someone ready for the next offer.

If you Cadet has a scholarship that means all tuition and fees, so if your Cadet has merit scholarships it’s up to the school whether some or all of those are retained.

Our DS applied for and “received” a 3 year campus AROTC scholarship at the end of his freshman year last year. This summer he completed all the DODMERB requirements and the PMS submitted one waiver where it was required. ROO is new and clearly has a learning curve although seems to be advocating hard for DS. It’s now the end of NOV of sophomore year and DS hasn’t been allowed to contract or start receiving any stipend for scholarship money. ROO keeps saying it’s with BDE for final approval. Army family of 22+ yrs so we get the hurry up and wait just quite frustrated and worried something else is happening or that it’s been disapproved. He’s concerned that deadlines for applying for summer training are fast approaching and he can’t be considered until he contracts. Is it typical for the process to take this long?? Have no idea if the hold up is BDE releasing funding or accepting the PMS waiver (minor concussion last winter that has been cleared by neurologist and the NCAA and student has fully returned to D1 athletic competition). Any advice or insight is appreciated @clarksonarmy

Got one in the same boat. The DODMERB/CC surgeon process is a little jacked up right now. If he is waiting on a medical waiver hopefully his ROO is checking often to see where the request is, and emailing or calling if it seems like it’s stuck in one place too long.
If the waiver is at Brigade waiting for Brigade Commander’s signature that shouldn’t take long. If the CC surgeon recommended approval than the Brigade Commander is most likely not going to overrule.
Recommend your son bug the ROO or HRA every week until the waiver is approved.
I’m also assuming that he actually got an offer letter. If that is the case then scholarship shouldn’t be going away unless he is waiver denied.
Keep in mind this is just my best guess and it’s based on how we do things in my Battalion and Brigade...your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the insight!! I believe he’s talking to the ROO almost daily and that the ROO is talking higher several times a week. He’s been told it’s “with the BDE nurse”...not sure exactly what that means other than maybe it’s still pending review by the CC surgeon. Hopefully they can clear the backlog soon and these kids can get their scholarships and slots for summer training lined up.

WooHoo good news the approval finally came through yesterday!!! He’s so excited and a ton of stress off his shoulders! Now fingers crossed he can get the summer training he wants...
