What are my chances at a 4 year scholarship?

I understand there are many variables that weren't listed like medical history, or criminal record, strong desire to be in military. But given those chances I believe he is in good standing. People do like to say "apply and find out" and "theres no way to know" but most kids who receive a scholarship have these credentials.

I can say what I believe his chances are. I am answering his question. I am using prior knowledge about who received scholarships (Which you can find averages of gpa, test scores etc of scholarship recipients) . The fact that i think he will doesn't mean anything in reality, i understand, but he asked what his chances were, and based on what I know about individuals who receive a scholarship, I think his chances are high.

There are way too many unknowns to make predictions. The PMS interview score is massive, and no one knows what that is. They won't tell you how many points you received on the interview. There is also the questionnaire score. No one knows what their score is on that either. If you ask, Cadet Command won't reveal that. Each year people post awesome resumes on this site and ultimately receive no scholarships at all after 3 Army boards. Conversely, some post what appear to be average or even less than impressive stats and receive 3 or 4 year AROTC scholarships. The PMS's on the 3 boards make the calls on who gets what on what boards. That is a closed door deal and no one exactly knows what goes on in there. The Army is looking for LEADERS to lead soldiers, not just scholars.

MichUSNA2021hopeulparent - Just my opinion, but I think you are overthinking this.

The OP asked for opinions. Opinions from strangers on the internet are probably worth what you think. But, in the end this is just an exchange of information, opinions, advice, ideas, etc.

That being said, rjb18 thinks that the OP has a good chance and told them so. The OP came on this site looking for opinions and the OP can take them with a grain of salt.

I get tired of the "apply and see" and "nobody can chance you" responses. On the internet they come across as snarky. This site would be a ghost town if people didn't take part in the amusement of chance me threads and the exchange of opinions for situations that no one really knows the answer to. I think everyone knows that the answers are in many case - just that - opinions. Everyone also knows that "chance me" threads are not answered by those who have the ultimate decision making power.

Sometimes, you just have to indulge people and play along. Just my $.02.

Ok sure I can appreciate your position. I just hate to see someone without specific knowledge possibly giving a prospective cadet false hopes. I mean, now the kid gets his hopes up, but what if he/she gets dumped with no scholarship after 3rd board? It would conceivably hurt more.

Good point about getting hopes up. These are teenagers so I can see where they could do so. Darn these "chance me" threads.... :)

All chance me threads should be posted with a disclaimer or at the very least the following emoji: :bang:

@pghman40, you’ve sparked an interesting debate here (though it’s a recurring theme). I’m firmly in the “we can’t chance you” camp. Averages are averages, ranges are ranges — and for every person with a certain set of credentials who succeeded, there’s someone with a similar profile who didn’t. How you look “on paper” only tells us so much about you.

That said, I offer this: Make sure your leadership experience demonstrates real impact, not just titles held or hours worked. Think quality, not quantity. Be ready to talk and write about how you left an organization or a community a better place because of your tangible actions. Best wishes to you.

Pghman40. I think you have a fine background. Keep your head up don’t stop trying. Present your best in your personal statement to colleges. Be sure to talk about yourself and how key elements in your Activities line up to your accomplishments and goals. Finish your college Apps early and complete before due dates. Good luck son!

Thank you! I have all my applications done as of now, just waiting to hear back

I agree with the previous poster, I think you are overthinking this. I am definitely one who says "you can't get one if you don't apply", but sometimes people just want to know if they are in the ball park. I think a stranger on the internet saying you have a good chance is not going to be a factor at all in how high someone's hopes are, or how bad it hurts when they don't come through. I will also say, that if they are coming to this forum for advice, they are also being told, "you look like a strong candidate, but make sure to have your B and C options ready just in case." I don't think I ever asked the question if my daughter was a good candidate or not, but I did privately compare her stats to those getting offers, that is all the OP is asking for, and that is normal and natural to wonder about.

To the OP - take some college visits and include the ROO in ROTC, show him/her your file and ask their opinion. All I can tell you is my daughter was told she was a strong candidate, but probably a 3 year was more likely, that is what she got. These conversations took place at college visits. She still had her plan B and Plan C options ready, and she was definitely stressed out waiting, but knowing she was "a good candidate" helped her at least feel confident if she didn't get one she could show up on campus and do well.

Only one guarantee if you do not apply you will not get it. FOLKS STOP ASKING THE CHANCE ME QUESTION.......NO ONE CAN ANSWER IT WITH ANY CERTAINTY> :bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:
Maybe the admins should ban :ban:anyone who asks this silly question as it has been answered over and over and over and over and over, etc.

Actually, the mods here would never discourage a poster from making a "chance me" post. The "chances" posts are often a candidate's first contact with the forum and it is their way of testing the waters as a poster here. If they are ridiculed or worse banned for asking these simple first questions, I doubt that they are going to stick around and continue to learn and maybe someday contribute back to the forum.

Our job here is to help, and often times that requires answering the same questions over again. It's what we do.

It is indeed what we do. It’s all new each year. Rather Groundhog Day-ish. (Obscure ancient movie reference, for those lurkers who need to ask Alexa or Siri what the reference is).
