Good Evening

My son was fortunate enough to be awarded a 4 year AROTC scholarship to his first four choices. One of those choices is an outstanding University that serves as the host unit for several schools. One of the Universities that they host is more challenging to gain admittance. If he accepts the scholarship at the host school then is admitted to the reach school, would the transfer process be different than other transfers if he decided to pursue. Basically, would it be easier to transfer scholarships between Universities when they share the same ROTC program. Both schools are private schools with similar tuition amounts.

Thank you in advance for the input. This forum is helpful for those new to the ROTC process.

If your DS has the 4 year scholarship he can apply it to any of the 4 top colleges he listed. If he doesn't get into the more challenging college, then he can request to have the scholarship transferred to the college he does get accepted into. It doesn't matter what school you get into or don't, the scholarship transfer process is exactly the same. I would apply to the school that he want's and if it doesn't work out then he can transfer the scholarship over to he next choice. My DS applied to his 1st choice, however was waitlisted, so we transferred his scholarship to his 2nd choice college and he is happy and doing great. Luck have it he got accepted a few week later to his 1st choice, but stayed at his 2nd choice college because he was very happy there, and so were we. Hope this helps.

armydad5 - When your son did the AROTC application portal and selected the schools of choice from the drop down box, did both the host school and the reach school both appear as schools you could select or was only the host school an option? In other words, when you select the school of choice are you only picking from "host" schools? Or, are all satellite schools in the drop down box as well? I think I recall that the host school was listed but all of the satellites where not when my DD applied for scholarship. If that is an accurate description of the application portal, then the question of what is the process of transferring the scholarship to one of the satellite schools is a bit of a different question than how do I transfer to a completely different host school.

I agree with jebdad. If only the host school shows up in the drop-down list on the application then I think the scholarship can be applied to the host or any of it's satellites. I'm hesitant because I can't recall if that's how AROTC works or if that is an NROTC thing. In any case the officers at the host unit should know and it might be worth a call to the ROO in that unit. ROOs know all (or so it seems to me). Perhaps one of the ROOs on this site will jump in with a definitive answer.

Thank you for the replies. The satellite school did show up in the drop down list and my son selected it as number six (mainly due to it being harder to gain admissions); however, was given scholarship to top four, which includes the host school. Like most, he's conflicted on what school to accept and we're trying to understand, if he accepts scholarship to the host school then is admitted to the satellite school, would the transfer process be an easier process since they share the same ROTC unit.

My understanding of the spring transfer process is that should not matter. What matters that they have room for him at the school he is requesting at the time of the transfer. Transfers are not guaranteed however one of the ROO’s on this site has said that they still usually go through. Main thing is to accept something now, do not let him miss the deadline, then he can see how the college acceptance goes and ask for a transfer later.

My understanding of your question is should he select the host school because that would give him the advantage? I would advise for him to accept the school that he would most likely attend if that stretch school doesn’t happen, then request the transfer if needed. That is just my opinion thought, not even worth two cents!

Congrats to your son!

If the schools are comparable cost than it is probably going to be likely that the transfer request will be approved. Whether it’s easier or harder I don’t know why that would change anything you plan to do. Strive for the reach school if that is the best fit, make sure you also apply to #2 best fit (hopefully one of those top 4 schools which you are going to accept the offer to), and hope for the best. Get accepted to reach school and drop that transfer request as soon as possible. Too easy...
