Does Cadet Command award ECPs or the MJC's on the National Board? Or both?

Your son's friend may have wanted the chance to serve active duty.

After your son completes his first two years of Junior College and transfers to the Citadel, will he have a scholarship from the Citadel?
After successful completion at a JMC with an ECP Scholarship, those cadets are then automatically awarded an EAP scholarship for completion at a 4yr SMC or ROTC program. The EAP covers everything except room and board. The Citadel awards a private Scholarship for EAP cadets which covers Room and Board. Thereby making attendance cost $0.

Probably the one saving grace of the ECP program...the Ike Skelton covers the last two years. ECP to SMC ... wonder what the chances are of getting GRFD revoked and being able to serve active duty.

This is the one sticking point before my son signs his ECP for VF. He has dreamed of AD and just doesn't have the test scores to back up his grades for a SA. We are hamstrung financially, and he doesn't want to incur the debt of college. Just don't want to be waiting holding the bag after the 3rd board and not have any type of scholarship.

This is a tough decision for your son to make, if he does sign the ECP Scholarship then he will most likely not have the opportunity of AD.

There are other options, SMP can be an option and as long as he doesn't take a GRFD scholarship he would have a chance to compete for AD. Cadets sometime receive Battalion Scholarships once they have started ROTC, have good grades, APFT, and strong in ROTC. While this happens at many programs it's not a guarantee and he would have to work hard.

Your son should reach out to the ROO at the schools he listed and talk to them about the options before signing anything.

EAP (the last 2 years of ECP) affords the chance of choosing between AD or becoming a TPU solider.

DS is interested in AD but is on the fence about. I think many have the AD bug at one time or another.

As I told him consider what you want as your ultimate goal.

As an AR Officer and DA Civilian I have seen a myriad of ways in which anyone can garner active duty time. Currently my reserve unit was tasked with a two year mission to provide a large number of Officers. Enlisted. Warrants and civilians. There were more volunteers than than positions. Lol.

My previous reserve unit has had TPU SMs on active orders for more than 5 years. The examllea go on and on.

During our visit to The Citadel, the campus tour cadet was a graduating Senior who had majored in computer science / cybersecurity. He had competed for a 4yr ROTC scholarship but received a 3yr but could not afford to shell out $50k for his first year at the citadel. He received the ECP. Attended Valley Forge. Received the EAP and a Citadel Scholarship and attended there for his last 2 years. He was an SMP cadet during all four years. And interned for DISA while at the Citadel. He decided to commission into the reserves, with good reason, as DISA hired him as into a GS12/13 position. His reserve unit is also affiliated with DISA. He told us he had always wanted to do some active duty time. And he got to do that with his firs assignment. His reserve unit afford him the opportunity for a one year overseas deployment supporting his civilian agency.

There is always a way. [emoji1]

Here's a question about MJC that DS asked and I hadn't considered...

What if he doesn't add the MJC option to his ROTC application until/if he isn't awarded 3 or 4 year at second board? Would he still be able to be considered for it?

Background...DS is applying to USMA and USAFA but as everyone knows, that is highly competitive. Turth be told, he is just like thousands of other kids applying to SAs. USMA is his Plan A. USAFA and AROTC are a toss up for Plan B. Since he was not awarded at 1st board (I know, like 90% of everyone), he now wants to adjust Plan C, which was to attend his first choice civilian school on our dime as a freshman and do ROTC to compete for campus based scholarship, to doing EAP at MJC and then hopefully transferring the last two years to aforementioned civilian school. Paying for freshman year has been bumped to Plan D and Plan E is to enlist directly (Plan D and Plan E are a toss up for him but we are pushing for education over enlistment).

So, can he still be considered for Ike Skeleton at 3rd Board if he doesn't select it on his application until after 2nd Board? Or should he go ahead and select it now? I think he would like the chance to compete for 3 or 4 year at 3rd Board and not have to eliminate the possibility too soon. Seems like it could potentially work and it hadn't occurred to me to try it. But if those of you with experience say it's a bad idea, I'll have a chat with DS :)

Does anyone know someone affiliated with the MJC's to know the percentages of cadets that wanted their GRFD revoked so they could pursue AD after completion of their follow on (4 year) school? I know the Ike Skelton and the FAQ's say "may" but what are the chances? 50/50, 70/30, or <1

The percentage is small but I’m sure it varies every year. There is someone on this board who’s son was ECP a couple years ago, only a couple out of his class received a recommendation to have their GRFD control number revoked, from what I remember neither was approved. If your son takes the ECP scholarship he should make sure he is ok with the NG/Reserves

Looks I'll have to look wait until the 2nd or 3rd board for an ECP or a 3 or 4 yr scholarship

Remember that Cadet Command often makes these early offers for ECP scholarships based on their feeling that the applicant may fall short of the cutoff for a traditional 3 or 4 year scholarship. The fact that you have not been offed an ECP scholarship may be that they feel that you are still in the running for the traditional scholarship at this time. Best you can do is wait for the next boards and see how it plays out.

Thanks! This makes sense!

I just talked to a ROO and because my son put a MJC in his National Application, the board automatically gave him a Ike Skelton and moved him down the line. He told me that they (Army) saves money this way by only paying 2 years and getting a 2LT than paying 3/4 and getting the same. I knew we needed to change that in the application. I don't know if we can go back and take it out, if we decide to decline the ECP offer.
