Nomination for Naval Academy Preparatory School?

Hello,
I submitted my application to the U.S. Naval Academy almost 2 months ago. My plan is to keep reapply to the Naval Academy until I get in or get a spot at NAPS. However, I was wondering if a candidate needs a congressional/Senatorial nomination to attend NAPS? Additionally, is there any way to determine how many appointments are offered for NAPS.

A nomination is not needed for NAPS or the Foundation program. Hopefully someone can chime in, but I believe NAPS classes are around 250 and Foundation makes around 60ish offers.
 
I always trust info from NavyHoops but did want to add that unless you are academically UNqualified you will not have an opportunity to attend NAPS. Only folks who need remedial academic work are sent to NAPS. Some folks don't understand that and get their hopes up unnecessarily.
 
@USNAismyplace yes if they live in your state & your district you are in competition with them. However, they do have an opportunity to earn an appointment from the Prep School. Regardless of how things shake out focus on what you can control, not your competition. Trust me all the kidos at NAPS & other SAPs are working their booties off this year to earn their NOMS from every slate they have available - and they are not focusing on you. Their focus is to stay afloat

This is not necessarily true. NAPS is not specifically for persons who are academically unqualified. It is another way for persons who did not receive a nomination to gain admittance to the academy. My daughter received a nomination to West Point & Air Force but Navy was already taken. She was then offered NAPS & is currently there. It was originally designed to allow fleet sailors a chance to bone up their academic skills since they had been out of school for some time. It’s also used to recruit athletes.

Getting a nomination does not equate to being 3Q or not. Two separate processes. Plenty of candidates get noms who end up not being 3Q. And each SA has its own way of determining 3Q. So a candidate can be 3Q for one and not another. I have no idea about your DD’s specific case and don’t need to, but just wanted to clarify a few things for those lurking or trying to understand the system.

Knew the above, but I didn't want to complicate the answer, as the enlisted and athlete aspects didn't seem to apply. Your daughters case is extremely rare. The real point was for one not to get their hopes up unnecessarily. I still think that point applies. Thanks for the clarification on details though... that's useful for lurkers.

True, but generally a candidate who is Not academically qualified based on their GPA’s & SAT’s are not granted a nomination. So it’s kind of a fair assumption to figure if a kid who earned a nomination probably was competitive at least academically. It’s such a tough process, I wish there was a way to give everyone of these young folks a shot, obviously they wouldn’t be trying so hard. It’s just so competitive. Whoever you are, DON’T GIVE UP!

Actually prior to reporting to NAPS they must begin all the nominations they qualify for even if they already did that last year. They must complete this process while at NAPS and it’s my understanding that if they do not receive one of those nominations they will then receive a SecNav nom IF they meet the requirements at NAPS. I do know my daughter did not receive a USNA nomination because there was a young man at either NAPS OR one of the Navy scholarships that received it, not sure what it was. Good luck to you, don’t give up, take the SATS as often as possible. GO NAVY

Are those individuals who are selected for NAPS or the foundation program more likely to be a candidate who did or did not receive a nomination? Also, are all applicants reviewed without the admissions board seeing if the candidate has a nomination to an Academy because that may give a person some leverage if they admissions sees their nomination.

Yes, you will be competing with them for a congressional nomination providing they applied for the congressional nomination, which they are directed to do.
 
NAPS and Foundation candidates are required to apply for noms. However, if they don’t receive one, they will be given a SecNav nom.

With all due respect, obtaining a "nomination" to USAFA or USMA does not equate to being academically qualified for Admission to USNA (or any other Service Academy). The official position is that NAPS/Foundation is automatically considered if a person is found not Qualified (the Admissions Board "Q"), and is independent of whether a candidate has a nomination.

Non-sequitor; there are many, many variables involved, including number and quality of applicants applying for each Service Academy. Did DS receive an Offer of Appointment to USMA or USAFA ? Even qualification at USMA or USAFA does not necessarily equal qualification at USNA.

Can NAPS be used to park an athlete a year, or get around the nomination process for someone that Admissions really wants to get in ...sure,
but I am sure that no one at Admissions says it publicly. I have seen many parents here try to justify why DS/DD went to NAPS/Foundation, and certainly get that all parents think their kid is perfect...but in almost all cases there is something that caused Admissions to think that this candidate could use another year of preparation. It's nothing to be ashamed of....in fact, it really is a blessing in disguise.

And before someone thinks I am being critical...full disclosure, I went through NAPS, I got my a$$ kicked in calculus at NAPS, almost failed out. I learned how to study and manage time. I will admit, I was disappointed when I didn't get in first time, but look back now at it and recognize it as the best thing that ever happened to me. A true sea story .... sitting in the Wardroom on my First Class cruise, I told the Skipper that I had gone to NAPS "because I was too stupid to get in the first time..." He looked at me with a deadpan stare, and told me his son was at NAPs.... Oops ! I smoothed it out when I explained to him what a great program it was and how it had helped me, and that I was in the top 10% of my class.

@madremom …. Congratulations to your DD … Hopefully your DD and our DD will meet together in the incoming class of 2024 4Cs beginning the summer of 2020 …. Our daughter was honored to receive an Appointment to NAPS earlier this month.

And I agree with @Old Navy BGO above when he says that NAPS or Foundation is a blessing … for any Kid, regardless of where they are on the 3Q scale.
 
I received a letter of recommendation for NAPS from my congressman however i have not received word back. Does this heighten my chances of attending. And is everyone considered for NAPS or only those who carry a nomination.
