Subsidized student loans while at USMMA?

Are midshipmen able to apply for these?

My son was wanting to have a little money for extra expenses while at school and wondered if he filled out the FAFSA if he would be eligible. I have 2 other kids in college so we've gone through the process with them but I don't know if it works differently for the Academy. He's not looking to take out a large loan, maybe just $1000 or $2000.

Or, what about a loan through Navy Federal?

Contact the financial aid office at the academy. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. Good luck.
 
I don't know about now, but when I attended, I would get extra money by working at various places on Long Island that hired us. Various menial job. . hard to get the time away Plebe year, but not like I was spending a bunch of money doing anything back then. I do remember getting a loan from the Alumni Association for some pocket cash first class year. Save up those $$$ during Sea Year. Unlike me, of course. . . . but that was money well wasted. . . .
 
There are lots of weekend job opportunities after plebe year. Both my DS and DD had work anytime they wanted. Everything from wait staff at special events like weddings and bar mitzvahs to parking valet to raking leaves/shoveling snow/ winterizing houses and more. Always well paid with generous tips. If you don't go too crazy on sea year, you will have plenty of money to spend from your pay abroad.
 
He's just thinking about right now. He has no money at all in his savings account and he'd like to have some spending money when they have liberty. He's had to stay behind. He studies non-stop so there isn't much time as a plebe to get a job. My husband and I would like to help him but we have 2 others in college as well plus another one starting next fall and then one more coming up after that. We've paid all the fees for the year plus his plane tickets but we don't extra to give him for spending money.

I told him to go to the financial aid office and see what he can find out.
