I took my CFA and passed all events except for the basketball throw. I threw 49 ft. I was authorized a retake almost immediately after my first test. I have been practicing the basketball throw and have gotten up to 58 ft. I was wondering if this is passable?

I am a male, and when I was authorized my retake, I was told the average for the BB throw is 63 ft. So, I am wondering if 58 ft. is passing?

Perhaps someone else here knows the answer to that question, @rdeschene. Clearly there are cadets who scored below average (that’s why it’s an average) but “below average” is rarely a good place to be when it comes to SAs. I believe one exists there at their own peril.

I scored 61 and passed; however, I believe the average is 67. I also scored significantly above average in all other events which balanced me out, but 61 will get you a pass if all other events are very good. I also got that score after increasing over 15 feet to almost 70 after a month and a half of practice, but I threw lower the day of the exam because I was inside and I had practiced outside so I didn’t know what angle to throw at.

I have just learned that 58 ft is passing from my RC. Thanks for all the response and help.

I have no idea if USMA is anything like USNA in this regard, but that should be the last time you are ever tested on how far you can chuck a basketball. If you get in, the next four years of PRTs will be push-ups, sit-ups, and a run.
As Carl Spackler would say, "ya got that goin for ya, which is nice."

I do not know when USMA specifically will be making the switch, but the Army will be switching over to the ACFT in 2020 I believe. The ACFT involves a medicine ball throw which is close but not the same. However, I imagine practicing for it will also involve a lot of repetition of form, so I would get used to that.
