I am a student in Vietnam. Know that West Point is a famous and prestigious academy that is only for US citizen, how can I be a part of it as a foreigner?

I am not positive that VietNam is considered an "invited nation."

I honestly have no idea. I have been surprised at some of the nations foreign Cadets and Mids have come from to be honest. Many I thought would not fall into that category and they somehow did. So who knows.

I am with NavyHoops.

I was always under the impression that you must go through your govt and the US embassy for this process. In other words, maybe your country says yes, but our country says no...or vise a verse. You need both to say yes.

I always see this as on par with something akin to an exchange program. You would attend, but go back to your country when it was done.
~ I look at the rated world in the AF. We train many pilots from around the world, but their country must agree to release them, and our country must agree to train them.

The majority of foreign cadets and midshipmen attend a U.S. Service Academy as part of an aid package or formal agreement from the U.S. Department of State in support of national security strategy. It's an investment by the U.S in building strong relations through the military connections forged, and the exposure to American culture. The foreign midshipmen and cadets often do a year at their own country's academy first, come to a U.S. Service Academy, receive the degree, get commissioned in their own country's military service or complete obligated government civil service.

I said "majority" above, based on my knowledge of foreign midshipmen at the Naval Academy. I never met any that weren't part of a formal exchange program through their country's military and diplomatic corps.

Wikipedia tells me there are Vietnamese military academies of various types. That would be a place to ask questions. They would certainly know if there was any agreement to send Vietnamese academy students to the U.S Academies.

Good luck to you, Original Poster. Wanting to serve is an admirable thing.

The US Merchant Marine Academy is also accepting foreign students. I wrote to admissions to confirm. See response below.

>Yes we are accepting International Students for the class of 2020. Students from Vietnam are welcome. I am the International Student Recruitment Officer for the Academy in addition to my other duties. Please do not hesitate to contact me for answers to any additional questions you may have.

There are opportunities for foreign cadets to attend. They attend USMA and then return to their countries to serve in the military. Each country has its own requirements and commitments for a cadet to attend USMA. Check out this link to start:

http://www.usma.edu/admissions/sitepages/pros_cadets_international.aspx

From the link

'To apply for admission to West Point, contact the U.S. Defense Attaché Office at the American Embassy in your country. This office serves as the link between the student, the host nation and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point."

Hi, I am a student in Sweden and I am 18 years old. Was wondering if anyone knew if West Point accepted international cadets from Sweden?

Norwich has cadets from around the world! My son studies with a young lady from Afghanistan, and several from South America. Happy to answer questions as well.

Our son's roommate is from the Netherlands (son of a Dutch officer), and another two of his cadet friends are internationals, one from Germany (one-year exchange), one from Norway. The father of one of the other two is a foreign diplomat, but I don't recall which one.

If you are looking to go to WP you need to follow MemberLG and NavyHoops advice. and go through the proper govt channels.

They are the ones that will tell you if Sweden allows their citizens to attend WP.

Otherwise, other SMCs do have international students. I would just check into that world deeper regarding the application process. They may require TOEFL scores. I would think WP would also require, but I am not positive.

I would also say that even in the active duty world, when you make certain ranks they have additional schools to attend. My husband went to what is called Professional Military Education (PME) as a major at Ft. Leavenworth. He had many students in his class from around the world. I want to say about 10% were international. He is now in another PME one of the most illustrious for Colonels. The National Defense University outside of DC. In his class section/group, that consists of 16 students, he has a gentlemen from Kuwait. The class size is @330. It is again, probably about 10% that are international.
~ I only bring this up to illustrate if you want to study with the US military and it does not happen for WP, there are opportunities later on down the road in your career that may allow this to occur.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I know that in order to apply to West Point I have to contact the U.S. Defense Attaché Office in my country, however, the problem is that I have done this. In fact, I did this a few months ago (september last year) and still have not received an answer from them. Does it usually take this long?
