Sorry! I tried searching threads and the good ole interweb but could not find an answer.

What should a mid list as their "occupation" and "employer" on a passport?
My first thoughts are "Midshipman" "United States Naval Academy"

Thank you!

Frankly, it probably doesn't matter, as long as its not misleading or untrue.
I would put Midshipman as Occupation (that is a rank, as well as description of what you are doing)
For employer, I would put US Navy. (Yes, US Government is techically correct)

I recall using “Officer” and “U.S. Navy,” on the advice of the personnel folks, so I would also vote for “Midshipman.”

USMA's website has specific instructions for Cadets on filling out passport applications.

Occupation - Military
Employer - US Army

I am sure it is the same for Midshipmen, except putting "US Navy" as the employer. The main point is that the applicant is considered active military, not a student.

Please keep in mind the Academy will issue them an Official Military passport to use when traveling in a capacity say as a student studying abroad or on a LREQ or during summer cruises.

Question for current active duty/Midshipmen -- Does Navy still encourage you to obtain and carry a standard Civilian (Blue) passport as well as the Official Passport ? Back in the day (shortly after a Petty Officer was singled out and killed during a hijacking because he was traveling on an Official Passport) , we were encouraged to get our own Blue passports and use discretion when using them. (Of course, no one would ever guess that young, fit, males, with short haircuts were US military).

I had both. I only used the official passport when I was on certain duty-related travel.

Asked Firstie @USNA they use the official passport when on duty-related travel.

Midshipmen on most LRECs travel on the regular blue passport. Some will get offical ones, but for most it's just the blue one.

A few years ago the academy made having a blue passport mandatory for all mids, don't know if that is still the case though.

Mids are required to have a standard civilian passport. If they don't have one by I-Day, they will fill out an application.
Here is a list of fees for first-time passport applications. I put that link in there, because you may not want to run out and
get one. Consider that if you get one after I-Day, the "gubmint" takes care of those fees for you. ;)

Also, there is a whole lot of the World out there that you will prefer to see without anyone knowing you're an Officer in the U.S. Navy or USMC.
Heck it's bad enough for you in some places on this rock, just having a U.S. Passport.

Mine was issued a military passport during LREC. Not sure if that is always the case may depend on where they travel. IMHO is if you can afford one get it one less thing to worry about.

If you are doing certain LRECs or something they will have you get an official passport. However, you are also required to obtain a regular passport if you do not have one. They have a "passport fair" where you can go and get all the paperwork taken care of. People that did not already have one were required to go.

Also, you can't use the red passport unless on official government orders, and it expires after a fairly short time, so it's not as if you can have the Navy get one for you and then use it as your passport when ever you go on vacation.
