I’m just curious whether doing flight school extends your mandatory service time. How about if you go in subs?

Yes. The commitment is normally 8 years (sometimes 6 for RW) post wings. This puts total active service at normally 9-10 years.

I think every School they pay for after graduation adds time to service obligation?

Not Sub School, Nuke Power School, SEAL training or Surface Warfare Officer School. Post-grad education, medical school and flight school

All pilots now has 8 year contracts after winging, doesn't matter what platform.

NFO's only have 6 years after wings.

It should also be noted that depending on what kind of aircraft you get assigned (jets) and what side of the house you decide to enter in on (Marines) you might not wing for 3 years or more, which of course means your winging committment would start later. One of my plebe summer detailers is actually still in Jet advanced right now (I graduated last May). That's definitely unusual, but the point is that winging commitment can and sometimes is pushed significantly later.

I know a lot of guys who wanted to five and dive that selected subs. A significant part of your time is spent on training in the beginning (you won't go to sea for the first 1+ years), and you get out with a fairly direct path into employment into the nuclear industry if you want that.

For Navy Pilots that’s true. I know some Marine Pilots only owe 6.
