Notification of Acceptance

How are candidates generally notified of their acceptance? I recently heard of someone that was notified via email from West Point directly. Is this customary? Thank you for any information you can provide.
 
There are other ways of notification as well. Sometimes the MOC will call the CC prior to the portal update and sometimes the BFE will arrive before the MOC call or portal update. May work different for recruited athletes receiving calls from coaches, etc.
 
In most cases MOC's are given 72 hours to notify the appointee before USMA makes notification.
 
Sometimes the MoC calls, sometimes the purple box shows up on your portal, and other times the BFE shows up without any warning. You just don’t know—and you may not know until late April.

Was this late in the spring? I have not heard of this type of notification. My DD was called by her MOC then it appeared in portal and BFE followed.
