Should I apply to both summer programs?

My greatest goal at the moment is to be admitted to West Point for the class of 2024. USNA recently sent out emails about their summer seminar. Should I apply to it as well as SLE although I really only want to go to West Point?

I know that there are those who have gone to either one and ended up at the other academy. For example, someone might have gone to SLE and then was admitted to USNA or someone went to the summer seminar and was admitted to WP not to count out the other SA’s summer programs. Help.

First and foremost, attending SLE or Summer Seminar will not impact your chances of admission. With that said, applying to multiple summer programs will give you a better chance at getting into any of them. Also, if you do end up going to the USNA Summer Seminar, you may gain insight to how you feel about it as a school and as a future career. A year ago when I was applying to Summer Programs, I decided to apply to USMA's on a whim and absolutely loved the experience as well as the school and the career opportunities after. Going to a Summer Program that didn't correspond to my number one school gave me great insight and helped me understand what I wanted to do going forward in my application process.

Yes, apply to all that you are interested in. As my DS was applying to two, he stated that it was like attending two different denomination of church camps. The end result is the same but how they get there is totally different. As it turned out, he was accepted to only one. Came home and changed his mind and now has an LOA to the one he did not visit yet. So you never know what your experience will be like. He was glad he had the opportunity to attend one and learned a lot.

Thank you, I will apply to both. I want to be more open-minded and be less afraid to try new things even if they’re not in the path of my intended goals. I noticed West Point changed their website around and when I look at the cost information it no longer says “need-based scholarships available”. Are they still available or should I just contact admissions?

Contact admissions. It seems odd that they wouldn't offer scholarships, especially since SLE and NASS are both the equivalent of recruitment tactics to persuade on-the-fence candidates to attend that Academy, or to expose kids who have little knowledge of USNA/USMA or the military. For example, an upperclassmen at my school, now a freshman in college at NC State, had applied to USNA, but after receiving an offer of appointment, decided to decline because he thought that academics and sports combined with all the stuff he did at NASS would be too much for him.

Would you apply to only one college? So why not apply to two summer programs and see where the cards fall.

I emailed my RC and turns out that West Point no longer offers scholarships for SLE, what do I do? I know it will not affect whether or not I get to attend the school, but I really want to take part in this opportunity.

Just apply and see what happens. Worry about paying for it after you are accepted. In the meanwhile, maybe you can pick up a part time job.

Do a fundraiser or do a an odd job here or there to make some extra money. You could also consider contacting a local veteran's group like American Legion or VFW and see if they could sponsor you and you could give a presentation to them about your experience. You could also reach out to a local USMA or USNA alum or parents group to see if they could assist.

When accepted to SLE, make a gofundme account, THAT IS THE BEST THING FOR FUNDRAISING!!! You will make the cost and even additional travel costs with that from friends and family and even strangers who want to see you succeed!

More important than SLE or NASS is Girls State. SLE is not worth WCS (whole candidate score) points for admissions while Girls State is.

Girls State Governor/Lt. Governor or Girls Nation are titles worth additional points during the admissions process, meanwhile going to SLE will give you zero shot at these. If there is a way you can fit a summer seminar and Girls State in the same summer, go for it.

Thank you! I applied to a few jobs but because the holiday season just passed, they have yet to reply. I will do all I can to pay the costs after getting an offer.

Yes, thank you! I emailed my local ALA requesting for more information and they got back to me pretty quickly. Hopefully I get accepted to both. :)

I will make sure to do that. Such a good idea. Thank you!
