USAFA Mascot Injured in Prank

You are literally the only one claiming it was “50-70 players” and “most of the team.” I already told you what happened. Were you at the game?

In his next tweet, the Navy Associate AD estimated 50-75 players. He protected his Twitter feed now so you can't see it.

I wasn't there but saw some of it on TV. My old academy roommate was there and estimated about half the team.

The team was at midfield with the coach. Sounds like the associate undersecretary for saltiness walked those tweets back for a reason. Like being untrue.

Oh my gosh, given the recent loss of life of Soldiers in Afghanistan, an ANG pilot in Ukraine, and Marines in the Sea of Japan, I couldn't care less about how many badly behaved cadets or mids there were, or that they did whatever after the football game. It will most likely be handled by the upper echelons afterwards.

Please put some perspective on this, folks!

I agree that the “outrage” is silly.

I'm a USMA grad, with a midshipman son....funny, I just posted a bit ago on a different thread a question as to whether anyone saw the end of the game stuff in the end zone....was curious as to others' reactions. I did not see the Walker thing, or the throwing of trash or anything like that. But I was sitting just above mids in corner of end zone, and did note, with I must admit, a measure of disappointment as a grad, a couple of the USMA players at game's end run into the end zone and mock the mids...not the end of the world by any means, and I was a corps squad athlete at WP back in the 80s (soccer), so I know of the emotion of the Army/Navy games at least to some degree...but it was just a bit classless...enough so that I noted it...I'm not outraged, but it was disappointing to see as a USMA grad.

Agree with Skippers -- emotions run high but one of the hallmarks of a military leader is being able to control emotion when you need to. It is beneath a mid or cadet to mock the other team, mids/cadets, or other SA after a loss. Shows a lack of respect and dignity and reflects poorly on the individual(s) involved and their SA.

The actions described in this thread if they occurred (I have no personal knowledge) in the most recent game on the part of one or both teams should be dealt with by the school leadership. Condoning (not punishing) such behavior -- even when it occurs following the passion of the game -- teaches mids/cadets that such conduct is appropriate, when it is not. Ever.

@UHBlackhawk and @Love4monsters.

I assume now that the shoe is on the other foot you support UCMJ'ing/suspending most of the West Point football team?
Please quote my message where I wrote that the Air Force player should be suspended and/or face UCMJ action. I can’t quite find it. I did state my college coach probably would have suspended me for doing such a thing, but that it was up to the Air Force coach to handle.

Same with this case. I saw the West Point players run over to the Navy side and was disappointed. I did not observe the other actions. It’s for Coach Monken to handle and hopefully he will deal with it in an appropriate manner if any action is warranted.

Many (not all) Navy fans in this instance remind me a whole lot of a certain side of the politics aisle, suddenly concerned about decorum and civility and “class” now that their monopoly on being ugly winners has been broken.

One of the great subtexts of this whole Army-Navy game was Navy’s beloved son (who coincidentally avoided active duty so he could fill a practice roster slot in the NFL) Keenan Reynolds talking consistent trash on Twitter about the Army team and how Navy would “expose” them.

Navy fans would do well to remember that you have to take it as well as you dish it out, and a large and vocal members of y’all happily mocked the Army football program and its players in some pretty classless ways for 14 years. So I’ll have to ask Navy fans to forgive my inability to share in the ever-so-recent pearl clutching and tsk-tsking about how to be “classy.”

Nice perspective Scout. Well put.

O God, our Father, Thou Searcher of human hearts, help us to draw near to Thee in sincerity and truth. May our religion be filled with gladness and may our worship of Thee be natural.
Strengthen and increase our admiration for honest dealing and clean thinking, and suffer not our hatred of hypocrisy and pretense ever to diminish.
Encourage us in our endeavor to live above the common level of life. Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be content with a half truth when the whole can be won. Endow us with courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy, that scorns to compromise with vice and injustice and knows no fear when truth and right are in jeopardy. Guard us against flippancy and irreverence in the sacred things of life. Grant us new ties of friendship and new opportunities of service. Kindle our hearts in fellowship with those of a cheerful countenance, and soften our hearts with sympathy for those who sorrow and suffer. Help us to maintain the honor of the Corps untarnished and unsullied and to show forth in our lives the ideals of West Point in doing our duty to Thee and to our Country. All of which we ask in the name of the Great Friend and Master of all.
Amen

I don't do Twitter so have no idea what was said. Assuming it was as you described . . . no excuse for that. As for the whole NFL thing, that's a DOD/DON decision, not a USNA decision (and a decision not universally endorsed by USNA grads). It's a subject for another thread.

The USNA grads I know (can't speak for "Navy fans" in general) did not feel great about Army's long losing streak. We lost for 44 consecutive years to Notre Dame, so know full well how it much it sucks. That said, I've no doubt there were some who said and did classless things during the USNA winning streak that did not reflect well on themselves or their school, which is sad.

Army grads and fans should justifiably celebrate all that your team has accomplished this year: a terrific season, winning the C-I-C trophy, and an upcoming bowl game (where, I and many other USNA grads will be rooting for USMA).

My brother bled Navy blue and gold and was a friend of many USNA grads on this board. He took the loss in 2016 with class. As he told me, "It's not a rivalry unless both sides occasionally win." The game was not quite the same this year without him.

I was at the game and was sitting in that corner of the field. I recall one player going over to the Navy section and standing in front of them with his arms folded in a mocking fashion. There were a few (4 or 5) other players near him but did not participate. At one point one of the Army fball players grabbed the dumb@$$ teammate and pulled him away.

After a great win, I was thinking the same thing. "What a classless thing to do by a young player who obviously doesn't get it." I hope he got disciplined.

The football players get treated like royalty at WP. If any non fball player did something like that in public, there would be some stiff consequences.

They also work about 3 times as hard as normal cadets, which is something that shouldn't be lost from the discussion.

As for "any normal cadet"...no. The Army Baseball cadet Jeering Section was legendary in 2004. Had a father from Bucknell threaten to fight us for heckling his son on first base, until a LTC stepped in and told the guy he'd step outside with him if that's what he wanted.

This statement is such a joke. Ask any cadet if they think the football players work 3 times as hard as normal cadets. That's a laugher.

LOL

When my son went to CVW, he told me a football player had his cell phone hidden behind his computer watching football plays instead of paying attention in class.

He also saw one sleeping in class. ;)

I don't want this to turn into a bash the football players thread. It is extremely difficult to be a core squad athlete in any sport at USMA. I was simply referring to the comment that football players work 3x as hard as other cadets at WP. From my viewpoint that is an exaggeration.

“When my son...”

So you don’t actually have any experience with this? Cool.

I lived with corps squadders all 4 years. The demands on their time are an order of magnitude greater than those on regular cadets. You couldn’t have paid me to switch places even if I did have the football talent.

Thanks for the CVW story.

You are welcome.

The plebes told my son that most teachers are very understanding of the demands of the athletes and students in general.

My son chose to serve his country and we hope he is fortunate to get in to the SA. He loved his visit. Sorry you feel like someone stepped on your toes. But it certainly wasn’t a lie.

I love your condescension.

It’s always a treat to be told how West Point works by someone who has an overnight visit under their belt.

Did you, perchance, stay in the Holiday Inn Express in Highland Falls?
