First, I want to thank everyone on this forum for being such a great help. I joined as my DD started her application process for the Army ROTC Scholarship and I have had several opportunities to ask lots of questions. A LOT has changed since I was doing this stuff in the 80s!

I now have more “dumb questions” that I am certain my daughter will need to discuss with her Cadre, but as always, she likes to be well informed before she asks questions at her battalion.

My DD did not get a CULP assignment as an MS1, so her plan B is that she is considering a 4 week, 6 credit hour summer study abroad in Spain (Citadel Summer in soain) to finish off her mandatory language requirements for the Citadel. She has also enrolled for an on line course when she returns for the Summer II session.

My first question is, although we are prepared to pay for these courses, does Army ROTC normally pay for summer courses that are part of the BS degree? And does it affect payment for the remaining semesters ?

Now for part two. Although my daughter started the 4 year Scholarship “qualified” with enough remaining hours to receive the 4 year Scholarship, if she completes her plan this summer, she will arrive back for her second year at The Citadel with 61 semester hours, which classifies her as an academic junior. For the record, she has NO INTENTION of graduating early. She plans on using the time to compete a minor and maybe take some allowed graduate courses toward her MBA while completing her BS degree.

My second questions is, will the ARMY ROTC have a problem with her academic status and her 4 year Scholarship? She is just being a proactive kid and trying to get as much done as efficiently as possible. But we don’t want any unintended consequences.

My third question is, if all is well with her plans so far, will the Army have a problem with her taking graduate courses concurrently with her undergraduate courses? The Citadel only allows a max of 6 hours of graduate classes in each semester of the senior year and the grades are not used to meet undergraduate requirements nor are they added to the GPA. The key here is that the citadel charges the same for 12 hours of classes or 18 hours of classes, so the cost to the Army should be budget neutral.

Sorry to have so many questions .... just trying to help guide my kid and help her avoid a problem she didn’t anticipate.

Thanks

The scholarship will not pay for summer classes, unless it replaces a “regular” semester. You get 8 semesters of benefits. Summer classes would be one of those semesters if you want to use scholarship funds (which you don’t).

We don’t care if a Cadet takes 30 credits and completes multiple degrees as long as the Cadet graduates on time with at least one degree. As long as she’s keeping her grades up and she’s meeting all other requirements and she can handle it she can keep throwing stuff on her plate.

I think it can be slightly different at various schools - at my DD's school, AROTC paid for the tuition portion of study abroad course that took place during wintersession, if the course taken was to meet a core requirement. I'm not sure if that policy would also apply to summer courses, though.
