Early action-interview?

I believe all Early Action Candidates must Interview. So hang tight if you didn’t interview yet or did not hear back yet. You’ll here from them one way or another. I would check in with Admissions to see where DD stands.

I am unaware if those who are not interviewed are not getting accepted. I am currently an EA applicant and I was contacted for an interview. Shortly after the EA deadline, I participated in the cadet for a day program. Prior to arriving at the academy, I contacted my admissions counselor to see if I could setup an interview while I was there. She responded and said that would not be necessary as the academy no longer considers the interview optional. She told me that when the time comes the academy would reach out to me about an interview.

A few days later I received an email stating he following...

“Based on an initial review of your application with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, we are requesting you complete an applicant interview. The purpose of the interview is to learn more about you, and allow you to learn more about the cadet experience. The amplifying information you provide in the interview will help the Admissions team make the most informed decision on your application as part of a holistic review.”

I do not know for sure what it means if your child was not contacted for an interview. Maybe they will be deferred to regular decision and USCGA will ask for amplifying information (and with that an interview). Maybe USCGA already knows enough about your child and they’ll be accepted to the academy with no amplifying information necessary.

The only one who knows is the admissions team. Contacting them would be your best option.

Best of luck.

My DD never had an interview. Are there others who did NOT interview?
DS did NOT interview! He went to AIM and was invited for an over night in Sept. He has a sibling 3C at the academy. DS saw his admission officer 3-4x in Orlando last year and once in New London. We know personally all the interviewers in our area. I’ll get my DS call his admission officer and I’ll message the one that usually performs the interview in our area. Let you know if we hear from them.

From my experience during bear day, the lead officer told us that for the application to the class of 2023, every applicant who is admitted to the academy must have an interview

Honestly this is probably the best change they've made to the application process. During my entire tenure at the Academy the interview process was optional and many of us felt that if it were mandatory it may have helped screen out those who lack certain personal skills that are fundamentally requisite to be a good officer.

I'm not trying to come across as arrogant, but I firmly believe that there are certain skills that you need to have to be a successful officer that you cannot teach: simple things such as being able to maintain eye contact, hold a conversation and be personable. An interview, even one over Facetime, would help screen out people who lack these qualities but who might otherwise seem quite qualified on paper.

DS 2018 strongly agrees!

The video posted above by 2023Dad says that not every accepted applicant will receive an interview (nor every declined applicant or every applicant). The interviews will be requested by the Academy if they feel they need "amplifying information" to make an informed decision on an applicant. They are projecting to complete around 750+ interviews with approximately 10% of those interviewed going on to receive an appointment - given that works out to only about 75 cadets, about 2/3 of the eventual class will not get interviews.
When I attended an admissions event at the Academy with my DD, I remember them mentioning something along the lines of they want to have personal contact with every accepted applicant. However, I think they may also be using the interactions with applicants at these events in lieu of an interview, if possible. If your DS or DD doesn't think they are being evaluated for admission during these events, they should probably reconsider that stance.
The video is interview training for admissions partners, and the presenter explains the new process starting around 5:30.

So....if DD was just invited for an interview, does that mean her chances of admission just went down? She attended AIM. Now confused.

I don’t think so. From what I’ve heard at a few admission briefs, a majority of applicants will be interviewed. The point of the interview is to get a better view of an applicant’s character and to further communicate why they want to attend CGA.

I don't know the answer to this but it gave me a question. Was your daughter done with her medical exams prior to request for interview or still in progress?
