Army ROTC Summer Requirement?

For Army ROTC... Is there any summer requirement before freshman fall semester begins? Like West Point has plebe summer, does AROTC have any training or time commitment the summer prior to starting?

My understanding is that there is no ROTC wide training. Some schools will have ROTC students report a week or two early for a school specific training, such as the Citadels Hell Week.

AROTC summer training is between either freshman and Sophomore hear or SophmSoph and junior year for basic camp and between junior and senior year for advanced camp. There are other summer training schools you can attend but these are the required.

Hmmm...where can we find infor about other summer training schools for incoming freshman? My son might be interested in that and I have no idea where to point him!

As far as I am aware there are no summer training opportunities for incoming freshmen. Turtle is correct in that there is a summer training(Basic Camp) avail between freshman and Soph year at Ft. Knox and Advanced Camp at Ft. Knox between junior and senior year. There may be other summer training opportunities available to the unit on a competitive basis-Airborne, Air Assault, Sapper Leaders Course, etc, but the number of attendees from any one unit is limited by slots allocated to the battalion and they typically will send the high performing MSII and MSIII students to those schools.

He should be training on the APFT and getting himself in great physical condition and enjoy his summer.

Make sure he checks with the detachment leadership at the school he plans to attend. My DS was in contact with the detachment for most of the application process and there was no early training scheduled. During the summer, a new Col assumed command and there was an optional week before school started for incoming cadets. The problem was that this information came out too late for out of town students to get early access to on campus housing so it was indeed optional and doesn't seem to be held against any cadets who did not attend. However, it could have been a required element and he would have had to scramble to figure out housing. My advice, make sure your son is in regular contact with the detachment prior to arrival in the fall. (DS is AFROTC so things might be different for other branches.)

Often, if it's required early training, the unit will provide the "housing". DS's unit bunked in the ROTC building during required early training. The unit also arranged access to the dorms a day earlier than everyone else, so after training was complete we were able to move him in without fighting the crowds. NROTC has it's benefits.

DS checked and there was no option for him to stay on campus during the early training. But, as stated, it was optional and was the Col first year. Moving forward things will most likely change...

Yeah, didn't mean to sound like I was disputing your earlier post. Just adding some information for the lurkers.

I see NROTC now has that New Student Indoctrination in the summer. I wonder if Army ROTC will follow suit?
