Reevaluated or prep route

I just received word that I did not get in early action and will have to wait to be revaluated. I am honestly shocked. I don't want to start a debate but I definitely blame AA. What do the prep routes entail? An additional year of schooling before going to CGA? I've been accepted to excellent engineering universities so may just choose ROTC.

When I was at Genesis Weekend with DS, I was eating lunch with I believe the Director of Admission. We talked about a lot of things but I still remember one recommendation. If my son has a true desire to go to the academy and does not get an appointment the first round or even a prep scholarship, then go self-prep. He highly recommended Marion (?) in Alabama for almost 9 of 10 prep-cadets are from there. He frequently visit Marion sometime with the Sup to check on the prep and could not tell who were self-prep or prep-scholars. As long as students can prove him or herself at Marion academically (Calculus, Chemistry and Physic), the odd of final appointment is high. One of our friend's daughter self-prepped at Marion and got an appointment the year after. Good Luck!!!

DD received a conditional appointment to the CGAS Program today. She did not receive a call but checked online and the letter was posted. IMO CGAS is an excellent opportunity! There are 3 locations; NAPS, MMI and Georgia Military College. At AIM this past summer my DD met former CGAS who were now attending USCGA. They all seemed very happy they had attended. That said, some had to pay themselves. The USCGA also offers scholarship to the preps with military benefits. E2 pay I believe plus it counts towards military service time. I am researching this now myself as the opportunity just presented itself today. I hope this helps! There are a lot of benefits to the opportunity! Best of luck to you!

My son graduated in 2017, and was CGAS. Kendall has it pretty much. I will say all lot of parents of direct appointments want to know why their kid couldn't do CGAS first. It is a great opportunity. You come into the Academy ready for Swab Summer.

If you mean AA as affirmative action, then I suggest you rethink your attitude. If not, sorry sorry for the misunderstanding.

My son is CGAS at NAPs and it has been a wonderful experience! Many people call it the golden ticket. A great growth year to experience the military life combined with academics and sports. They are commissioned with the CG and use part of their salary to pay for uniforms and other expenses but the school is covered by CGAS. Let me know if you have any questions.

Does the prep route mean you have an guaranteed spot?

They often call the prep school slots "golden tickets" - while they not provide a 100% guarantee, cadets that work hard, perform well, and stay out of trouble typically receive appointments the next year. +1 @AuxNoob - CGAS is a great opportunity. @Kendall, congratulations to your DD.

CGAS is not a “guaranteed” spot. You have to complete the program without getting in trouble and meet the GPA requirements. You resubmit an application and essay, and DOD requirements. If you meet these requirements then you most likely will have a spot.

Thank you @cns3700! DD has been in contact with a friend at NAPS w/ CGAS. NAPS would be her first choice. She is very excited. Still doing a lot of research and we don't quite know what we don't know yet. That said, I am sure we will have questions in the future and I would be grateful for your advice. We will continue to read and research, then send questions your way. Thx!

@Kendall - my son probably knows her friend! They are all very close at NAPS. After going through INDOC, they all have each other’s backs. Definitely available for questions when you have them. Congrats!

“Don’t want to start a debate”

AA means the college is “Acknowledging Adversary.” Positive way of interpreting AA.

I know this isn't the point of this thread, but I feel the need to say it nonetheless. If you really blame affirmative action for why you didn't get into the school, then I already found a big reason why you didn't get in. It's because nobody deserves to be here, but rather everybody works hard to earn a place here and we're a group of people who take accountability for our mistakes and failures and do what's needed to make sure they don't happen again. So if you think that AA is the reason you didn't get in, and that you just had the Academy all stitched up from the start, then I'm sure your application reflected it whether you think it did or not. Feeling like you deserved it is a terrible attitude, and won't help you get into the Academy, survive the Academy, or serve effectively after the Academy. Don't sit around and feel sorry for yourself, get out and do something about it.

There are two ways that going to prep works, sponsored and non-sponsored. Sponsored prep is basically a golden ticket and as long as you do your part, you will have a spot in next year's class. Non-sponsored prep is a little different and you will get various opinions about the value. IMHO, a candidate that is not sponsored and who can handle the first year of college would be better served by attending a four year university instead of trying to self-prep. A candidate who may lack some of the maturity or not have the strongest academic background may do better with a year of prep.

Is a deferral sponsored prep?

I do not believe a deferral is an appointment for sponsored prep. I believe it means you are still in the running for an appointment to the USCGA :). My DD received an update to her portal followed by a call the same day with a conditional offer of an appointment (conditional on DoDMERB) to USCGAS (sponsored prep). It seems you are still in a great position with a possibility of admission to USCGA or USCGAS ~ both an honor to attend IMO! Wishing you the best of luck!

If your child wants the USCGA above all else and is not offered an appointment, then the Prep Schools are the way to go. USCG does not have an ROTC program, but an alternative route is to go to college, graduate, then apply to OCS. OCS is right at the Academy, and is a great way to go without having to wait a year.
