ROTC/Reserve Units (Advice needed)

Take everyone's advice in this thread with a grain of salt. It may not be the answer you were wanting, but they are answers to your question(s).

I think it's also the fact that my mindset has changed a little bit since I posted the original question. I don't NEED to go AD but it would be nice if possible, also if I were to get deployed, I personally would be ok with it but I think I'm taking my family's views into account very heavily. It's just a matter of fact of what happens. I am just hoping it all works out in my favor basically because the studying time and missing out of friends does not bother me very much at all.

So then why are you even here asking? I am truly totally puzzled.

If you only knew how much experience you were talking to in this thread..... you might just listen. You sound like a lot of young kids, you’re ready to put on the uniform and change the world. And that is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but the world is still going to need changin’ in 4 years. I’m not sure what’s changed for you since your original post in that you don’t need to go active duty. What are you planning to do then? If you want to go Guard (and stay, because be honest with yourself the chances of you going AD are very slim if you commission into the guard) then go the SMP route. If you are interested in active duty, stay away from SMP for now. That door won’t close, but the active duty door will start to shut the further down the road you go with the guard.

It’s good to be excited to get started, but it’s not going to be what you think it is. Slow down, decide what you want your life to look like in 5 years and execute that plan. PM me if you want some additional guidance. My ROTC data is old, I applied to ROTC 10 years ago, but I spend my days in an army uniform and have a general idea of what that’s like.

I've avoided commenting on this thread because I am certainly no Army, Guard, or SMP expert. However, I thought perhaps it has reached a point where a quote from my Marine Corps son would be helpful. as it reinforces Bull's wise comment. "NO ONE joins the Marine Corps they thought they were joining".

The point is that we all have an ideal of whatever Service we'll be joining, and the Service will never live up to those expectations. Just sayin'.
