Handy Links for Appointees & Parents

Count six weeks after I—Day. PPW starts that Thursday and runs through the weekend.

Oh that video! Seems like forever ago. Cannot believe the changes on one short semester. I need to show that to my Plebe and see what he remembers of that day. Probably not much. Most looked stunned. My Mid sure did.
Agreed on all points. seems like a lifetime ago and Herndon just around the corner.

What time roughly does I-Day ceremony end? I know there is the opportunity to say final good-byes after and Ive heard is best to keep those brief.

I’m looking at flights and the last flight leaving BWI is at 820pm that Thursday June 28. Wondering if that would be pushing it or do parents say good bye to plebes at like 6? Where does one find a schedule of I-Day? maybe it comes in the packet to report? I think that doesn’t arrive until April though. Thanks in advance

The oath STARTS at 6:00 PM and you'll be there for over an hour. You probably should not book an 8:20 flight and that is even if you have an uber or someone dropping you off. If you have a rental car, its really a definite NO. Consider traffic getting out of the vicinity of USNA after a major event as well as normal weeknight traffic and getting to the airport in time to do the security shuffle.

Agree with OldRetSWO! Take the evening relax see DTA, have a cocktail to toast your plebe and leave in the AM. This day was very emotional!

No matter your plans to get off the Yard or leave Annapolis via rental car, shuttle or Uber, it will be you and the families of 1100-1200 midshipmen, roughly at the same time. Too tight for an 8:20 flight out of BWI.

Agree no way on that flight. After the Oath, plebes find their families. DS had to be back with his company at 7:15 pm. That time is ingrained in my brain, because he asked me 700 times “what time is it? “ Their newly found paranoia about time.

I'm also searching for an I-Day schedule. Do parents say final goodbyes on the 27th or 28th? TIA

They will march into Bancroft Hall the evening of I-Day (the 27th). You will not see them again for about six weeks (if you come to Plebe Parents Weekend).

You will receive a few phone calls on specific dates and times, during Plebe Summer.
They march them out along Stribling Walk and hand them their cell phones and give them 10 whole minutes (as I recall) to talk to you.

If the information says that they will call at 1:00PM, then that is exactly when the phone will ring. Their Detailers will tell them when there is two minutes left, then 30 seconds, and it's over. Look at the clock, it will be exactly 1:10PM.

Did they shorten the time to 10 minutes? For Class of '19 the call was 30 minutes.

I do not remember, but it seemed like only 10 minutes to me. ;)

And then there were those plebes who made the near-fatal choice of calling GF or BF and not mom or dad...

What about cases where the Plebe doesn’t have a good home life and can’t or doesn’t want to call their parents? Are they really that harsh about who you call?

No one is listening in to their calls. They are free to call whom they wish, or call no one.

I was wryly referring to the reactions of anxiously awaiting parents who got zero minutes of call time or maybe two, because the plebe called others first. This happens every year, and becomes the stuff of funny family stories.

It was 30 minutes last year. Divided equally into: parent/friend/gf, it’s 10 :)

Get creative. We had his GF and siblings come to our house. We had a list of questions we really wondered about, to ask in case the convo lagged (they can be overwhelmed. Stressed. Emotional. Not exactly chatty. Or they can talk your ear off. Both are normal). When he called ON THE DOT, we had him on speaker phone, and DH recorded the convo with his phone. The last 10 minutes or so his gf took the phone downstairs for some private discussion.

That first call is AMAZING. Have the tissues ready. Although I am an admitted “crier”. But it’s so good to hear each other. No matter for how long. And it’s awesome to hear them tell about their new life!!

I enjoyed the first letter as well, DS wrote 3 pages -those letters in between calls is priceless
