Have fun and go browse the many past threads on I-Day suggestions.
It seems many settle on arriving at least a day or two in advance, especially if coming from other time zones and less humid climates. Take a day to walk around Naptown together (you’ll recognize other family groups distinguished by a young man or woman with a slightly hunted look to their eyes). Or take a day doing M&M (monuments and museums) in DC, or enjoy the Inner Harbor in Baltimore (National Aquarium, Ft. McHenry, USS CONSTELLATION), or go over to the beaches in Delaware or Eastern Shore of Maryland. The idea is to take a few days together to have some family fun, decent meals and sleep. The plebes to be won’t sleep well the night before reporting.
After the oath-taking and a physically and emotionally exhausting long day, you’ll want a good meal and perhaps an adult beverage, possibly with new-found fellow parents.
Hit the Annapolis Post Office the next morning to mail the first care package, head home. Though there are some parents who linger through the weekend and walk onto the Yard to try for a sighting, I counsel it is best to leave your fledgling to soar on his or her own.
Note: I think NAPSTERs and prior enlisted check in the day before I-Day.
