VMI Appointment Timeline?

What are drum outs?

It's a bad bad thing.

When a cadet is found guilty of an honor violation, he gets "drummed out."

It happens at 0330 (I didn't know this was the exact time. I just remember it was in the middle of my beauty sleep).

The whole Corps is awaken with snare drums. Those who choose to get out of their rack (Rats have no choice... they have to get up) gather in the main courtyard and wait for the Honor Court to march in. Once the Honor Court marches in, the president yells out who was found guilty of an honor violation. By this time, the dishonored cadet has left the school so it's not like he's in the crowd hearing all this.

Once this is done, everyone goes back to their racks, catches a few more snores before BRC, and you continue on your merry way not lying, cheating, stealing or tolerating those who do.

The whole thing could be different now though.

Oh no, it's exactly the same. Also, I believe everyone (not just the RATS) need to be present during the drum outs. We've already had two drum outs this year, and I can definitely say the experience was a shock to the system.

DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR

VMI ... be proud of maintaining the standard ... when I went through USAFA 79-83 ... it was also “one strike”. .. today it has been “adjusted” to account for societal and cultural norms ...

0333 is actually a fairly recent thing. I am certain it was 0330 up through the mid 2000s.

My DS is a current Cadet and it's not any different now. It's still a one-strike system. If I recall correctly a couple of years ago a 1st class Cadet about to graduate was drummed out a few days before graduation. Honor System at VMI is serious stuff.

this happened last year, the day before graduation

DS got something from VMI in the mail today. I can't wait until he opens it to see what it is. I'm hoping it's his appointment letter and financial aid package so we can make a decision. We are going to the open house this weekend.

Any news??

Any news??

I wish. It was just the information packet for the open house this weekend. TBH, I'm confident he will get accepted. He has a 28 ACT (30 superscore), 4.3ish weighted GPA, and was football co-captain his senior year. We met with his admissions counselor when we visited for football a few weeks ago and he didn't think he would have any problem getting in. What worries me is that he won't get enough financial aid to make it feasible.

We are going to the open house this weekend.

theroyz71 -- let us know how the VMI overnight/open house went for you and your DS . . . VMI speaks to people . . . to some, VMI just feels right . . . to others, not so much . . . don't know too many that are "middle of the road" . . . hopefully the open house was well run -- they usually are . . . only "down sides" on visiting this weekend was the parade cancellation due to weather and it is after "breakout" so you don't get to see the Rat Line experience ...

Falcon A -- we got home a few hours ago. The open house was great right up until we went to the financial aid presentation last night and found out how much financial aid they typically give to OOS cadets. I know each case is different but if I understood correctly, we would be on the hook for around $30K per year which isn't something we can afford. We should know for sure in the next few weeks, his appointment letter was waiting for us in the mailbox when we got home so his financial aid package should be here before too long.

Best wishes on the financial aid. I hesitate to comment because this is so personal. College has gotten very expensive. We can debate as to why and the worth. We have 2 in college at the same time as well. One at VMI and one a walk on athlete at at another university. It is hard. I will say the $ we have spent at VMI appear to be worth it. From your other posts it appears your DS has some good options. I hope VMI works out if that is his choice.

I hope you find out some good news about financial aid. OOS is so expensive at many places so my DS only applied to one OOS school.

When we get the official appointment letter to VMI, DS will announce to family. When we went to the overnight open house last year I could truly see my son going there. I hope it works out for yours.
