What can I expect to hear next? Will a BFE/TWE come next or will something appear on my portal? My letter said I’m placed on NWL? What is the typical wait time?

No one knows what will come next. Last year my DS got a 3Q letter in December. He heard nothing else until mid April when he got a QNS (Qualified, Not Selected) letter on his portal and then in the mail (also known as TWE). This year he was 3Q on 1/28 and portal updated 2/2 but no BFE yet. There will be several offers sent out each week from now through May. Waiting is all you can do.

If you are lucky enough to receive an appointment, there is no absolute way that Cadet Candidates are notified.....Some get a phone call from the nominating source. Some get a letter from USMA. Some wake up one morning and check their portal and there it is!! You typically would not get a BFE until one of the above occurs, and the BFE usually comes pretty quickly following the above. Regarding the TWE............no way to know for sure. It will just show up in your mailbox. But think BFE, be positive, keep working hard, and enjoy the last 4 months of HS! POOF, it will be gone.......enjoy being a kid while it lasts, and best of luck!! And probably most important, have a solid plan B and C.

PS........NWL........National Wait List

There is no typical wait time. You could hear something tomorrow or be waiting until May.

Only your RC has relevant information. You might send an email to them confirming your interest and asking what your chances are.

My son was also put on NWL. Does anyone have any sense of how many come off?

If you read the Class of 2021 statistics, the amount of people who are qualified are about 2,159. The amount of people admitted are 1,240. So the percentage of people who are admitted after being qualified are about 58%.

Please correct me if i'm wrong!

So is the NWL essentially the 3Q letter, but he wasn't the top choice in our district? I haven't actually seen what he got, he is at an overnight ROTC visit and just texted me. He thinks the NWL is pretty much a "no". Would like to cautiously encourage him if warrented.

I hope it’s not!! I check my portal several times a day! From what I’ve read on this forum the admission team meets on Tuesday and some appointments go out weekly! I’m staying positive until Otherwise notified...TWE

The 3Q letter/NWL is a good thing. It is not a "No". Think of the NWL as a holding pattern while waiting for clearance to land; about half will be given landing instructions and the rest will be diverted to another airport because the gates are full. But it's not a 50/50 proposition - some planes are higher priority than others.

The NWL is very different from a civilian college wait list. A college wait list is a rejection with an option for the college to come back later if they have more seats to fill. The NWL contains eventual district winners, QA's, AA's, etc.

That’s a great explanation. Very glad it is not a NO!!! Thanks for your reply

I was just wondering- is this the same letter that you received? Is this a 3Q letter and does this mean you are on the NWL? Would love some clarification on what this all means.

Yes it is! I got the same letter last week. He is on the NWL

NWL is NOT a 'No'--it is the path to admissions for most cadets. NWL means you are well into the thick of things and more likely to be successful than not.
However, you may not hear ANYTHING until late April--and then it could go either way.
So, work on that other awesome plan for next year--and be ready to have to make a hard decision when USMA comes through for you all on April 27th or something like that.
Make that deposit to another school, accept that Army ROTC scholarship. Follow the path that leads to becoming an Army Officer... and be ready to have to do soul searching when accepted to USMA.

Am editing this to add, being a member or observer of this forum is a blessing and a curse--at times. Each week people will post that they have received the call or the BFE...and you are still waiting with no update. It is normal to give up hope and think all the appointments are gone and the class is full. It is not full until R-Day or until you receive a rejection/not selected letter. Keep faith. It will be hard in ten weeks to come...but keep faith.

Sorry to clarify .. what is QA and AA = ??
QA = Qualified Alternate; these are the legally directed 150 appointments made from the NWL in order of merit based on WCS score.

AA = Additional Appointee; these are the 200 - 400 remaining appointments to fill out the class and do not have to be in order of merit. Most of these are recruited athletes and minorities.

When your portal updated on 02/02 - did it change to an Appointment - or another QNS letter? Hope you received wonderful news!

This year DS portal update was an appointment. It was a huge relief to know already as opposed to waiting for several months like last year. I hope you get good news too!
