Complete but medically disqualified USAFA

My DS has a DQ, and his portals at DoDMERB and USAFA are the same as your DS. No appointment (yet!). He has a MOC nom as well. But he was notified in December (a month before MOC nom) that USAFA was seeking a waiver. He's submitted all information requested. Compare to USNA where he also has a MOC nom and a "complete pending review" application. He was told by USNA admissions they won't seek a waiver until appointment is made. My assumption is that while USAFA may have asked for a waiver from their respective WAs, neither SA will give the waiver until appointment. But I could be wrong.
Do you happen to remember how long it was after the DQ that he received notice of of the waiver? Thanks.
DS received his DQ notice in early December and about 2 weeks later he was notified the USAFA was seeking a waiver. He has responded to all requests for information. He is now waiting to see if the waiver will be granted. He is also waiting to see whether the USNA will seek and then grant a waiver.
Oh, I see. I got my DQ a little bit over a week ago. Hope your DS gets his granted!

I'm in the same boat here. Right shoulder injury, surgically fixed 6 months later, 10 months after that I'm an award winning athlete in my school. I've been “Complete but Medically Disqualified" with a congressional nom since November, just a waiting game.
I have the same problem- shoulder surgery, “Complete but Medically Disqualified," have had a nomination since Nov, etc. USAFA requested a waiver. Have you done anything or is it really just waiting until you hear more?

Hello! I have searched the forum but have yet to find a crystal clear answer on this...
My DS was DQ’d by DodMerb for ADD/meds taken after 14 years old. DodMerb site says “Pending Waiver Submission/Review” (Since 25Jan)but USAFA portal says his application is “Complete but Medically Disqualified. “. (Changed today-1Feb)No mention of waiver here. Does this mean that no waiver will be applied for and he is done for this round with USAFA?
We expected this - found out about requirement (no meds and showing academic success) at SA event the fall of his junior year. He stopped taking meds (under supervion of MD) and his grades are great 3.86 unweighted and heavy on honors/AP classes, made a 35 ACT/1580 SAT/ 5 on AP CalcBC/and was just selected as candidate for US Presidential Scholar. All this AFTER he stopped taking meds. We sent in all remedial DodMerb asked for. He is also applying to USNA but portal just refers back to DodMerb .
What steps should he take next?
Call the Academy, find out who the admissions counselor is for your son, ask them directly. They will tell you better than anyone on here. People here are great, they know their stuff, but this is the kind of question you should call them about.

It is my understanding that the service academy will request the waiver if he has received an appointment. My DS received a conditional appointment at another academy, waiting on a waiver.
I understand that they will request a waiver if they feel his file is strong enough, I guess I am asking if having “medically disqualified” with no mention of waiver on his portal means that they chose not to request one. Has anyone had that on their USAFA portal and then had a waiver requested after?
I had that on my portal, I finished my app October 30th and have been medically DQ’d since September but in early December the waiver authority contacted me. Currently I’m waiting for it to be processed and my portal still reports as “candidate but medically disqualified.”
How long after DOd DQ ed will the SA update about the waiver?

My son was medically dq’d Jan 9 due to a pollen allergy and potential repiratory hyperresponsiveness. We submitted ami to dodmerb from pediatric pulmonologist showing no respiratory hyperresponsiveness and healthy/normal lung capacity. He’s never suffered or had a history of asthma or respiratory issues but does suffer from seasonal pollen allergies. Documents were submitted to dodmerb Jan 22 and his file says under review but spoke to someone in the USAFA ascension office today and she said no waiver has yet been requested. She suggested my son reach out to his admissions officer to ask if they will be pursuing a waiver. Do they usually request waivers if they are going to pretty quickly? Does this mean a waiver won’t be requested and he is done? He has a senatorial nomination/ sat 1510, good grades in rigorous classes/ap classes at a very hard school. varsity captain of school and premier soccer team. volunteer/leadership activities as well. I‘m guessing that since usafa hasn’t requested a waiver yet, they won’t but am curious if anyone has similar experience.

My dd has a similar DQ. Her application was complete in Nov. and she was medically DQ in Oct. after her physical, but the waiver wasn't requested until the first week in Jan. When was your son's application complete? My guess is USAFA just hasn't had a chance to review his app yet. I would start gathering medical documentation r/t to his allergies/history of respiratory hyperresponsiveness (if any) and pharmacy records because you will likely need to submit them based on my dd's experience. DD also took a methacholine challenge test (passed) and AFROTC also asked for pulmonary ex. stress test (x2, 1st one wasn't definitive). USAFA has only asked for medical records and a questionnaire form so far, but maybe they also have access to the medical testing submitted to AFROTC??? I don't know. That is our experience.

Thank you. That is helpful! by complete application, do you mean when his medical status was determined? Then Jan 9 2020. He had his application in my mid November and had his ALO interview over Thanksgiving weekend. He’s had his nomination since mid October. he’s never had any pulmonary/respiratoey issues. I think what flagged the dq was last year his allergies were bad and over a long weekend and without examining my son, a doctor in our practice(not his pediatrician) prescribed an inhaler. that is the only time he’s been prescribed an inhaler. He used it once and hasn’t used it since. The pediatric pulmonologist did lung capacity testing and testing for hyper responsiveness and he passed all the tests and showed that he didn’t have hyper responsiveness. I just don’t know what to make of the Waiver not even being requested yet. Makes me think USAFA won’t request waiver but perhaps it is just as you say and they have t reviewed his file yet. I hope so! Thank you.

Yes, by complete application I mean everything complete including ALO interview. DD also had her nomination by then, too. I do know her application was not reviewed until early January because that is what her admissions counselor told her (DD had called with a question and her counselor just mentioned that her file had been presented). The waiver request showed up in the next few days after that conversation.

I would go to the DoDMERB subsection of these forums and comply with the FAST stickie to have your son contact Larry Mullin, the chief of DoDMERB. He will be able to help your son make sure all of his information has been received, etc. My dd did find that it took several attempts with some pieces of information to make sure they were received and processed.

The inhaler prescription after age 13 is the automatic DQ, I believe. Get your son's pharmacy records proving it was only filled once.

They will request a waiver if deemed competitive not only if you get an apt

I believe the requirement is 2 yrs off medication. I hope a waiver comes through for you!!

My DD had a waiver requested after her portal was med DQ since Nov. this was in Jan so hold tight

Did you send over your medical records from your surgery? My DD wasn’t requested but we did it anyways just so they’d have it. Didn’t take long for it to be granted

Please hold tight, I’m sure they will with those stats. I know the waiting game is SO hard
