Does USMMA ever deny early (it would help with Plan B decision) or is everyone on hold until the very last minute accept for the ones offered an appointment and accepted.

We were just talking about this last night. I think if you are 3Q and on hold then you won't get the TWE until the bitter end. They will be offering appointments until the class is full from the hold/NWL. It's tough with locking in Plan B when you have coaches wanting them to commit and lock in a roster spot but you are holding out for USMMA. Good Luck! DS is on Hold and waiting...

The second time I applied (snail mail days) they just never even acknowledged me. I guess that was their non-denial denial.

Sorry what does 3Q mean. It is so very frustrating especially if they can play a sport at Plan B. Is hold different than NWL. I feel if not good enough now he will only get a spot because someone doesn't take it. I guess that is everywhere on a wait list I suppose. Question did you tell your Plan B you are waiting on academy.

Qualified medically, academically, and physically.

And they will only get a spot because they are good enough.

Nobody gets spot unless they are good enough. Plenty don’t get a spot despite being good enough.

DS was 3Q and on "Hold" all the way until the beginning of June and then offered a spot at the Prep School. He had multiple baseball scholarships from other colleges that he had to decline during the waiting period... very hard to wait and wonder! He is at MMI now and I think it is for the better, he will be much better prepared WHEN (thinking optimistically here) he gets his appointment to USMMA this year.

we locked in a couple Plan B's. We locked VMI and a state univ. where he had the full scholarship. Once he accepted an appointment, he let VMI know he was not coming. VMI gave us our money back. We kept the state univ. locked until he was through indoc just in case there was an injury or he decided to leave, so that he wold have had a place to land. We did not tell plan B that we were waiting on an Academy.

If you are signing letters on intent, etc., for Div. 1 sports, however, I do not know how that letter of intent would effect play at a div. 3 school. Something your advisor/consultant on the athletic scholarships can probably answer for you.

Hold is not different than NWL. What happens is LOA's are offered to a select few. The remainder of applicants all end up on the NWL. Everyone (mostly) ends up on hold once you are 3Q but before being offered an appointment. The hold is there because admissions waits to see the pool of applicants before deciding. Even though you are on the NWL, and on hold, nobody knows if the state allotment has been made or not, so, while you are on the NWL, you may also be on a state list that is unfilled as well.

It is not late enough to think that the only way you get a spot is if someone declines.

They mentioned the Prep School. With no guarantee not an option for us and besides it is something additional we have to pay for. I was more curious if they give denials this early. It would certainly help with a Plan B.

Yes, USMMA gives denials all along, with denial numbers increasing as time goes by. I know the waiting is difficult, but it is still early in the process for all five service academies. Think of all the character building being done here. Take a moment to reflect on how amazing your DD/DS/self is to have made it into this elite group that is qualified to be appointed to a service academy. Try not to obsess too much, and do enjoy your remaining time together as a family. Have faith that your DD/DS will land where they belong.

Prep school can mean a couple of different things. There is sponsored and non sponsored. If sponsored, it is similar to a golden ticket for the next year, meaning, as long as you make the necessary grades, etc., you will receive an appointment. if non sponsored, it is just like attending any school, and reapplying. Fokks who have been the MMI route can chime in, but, I think the annual cost is about 20k??, and 1/3 paid by school scholarship, 1/3 by USMMA scholarship and 1/3 by the student. I could be wrong here, but that is the general formula for the Div1 DOD Academies.

With the caveat that unless you are looking at a D1 sports program, where you have NCAA rules to comply with, waiting for USMMA and accepting Plan B are not mutually exclusive.

And, again, it is very early in the process. Loa's may have an early response date, possibly April, while others will have a response date of sometime around may 1. There is a lot of time left.

And, second, if the wait is something you can't deal with, USMMA may not be for you. There is a reason why the entire process takes about 18 months. The process itself is, imho, designed to weed out those who are not dedicated enough to stick it out.

@golfindad - you are very close on the portions paid for prep school. Our DS is a sponsored prep (SAP) and it was about 1/2 paid by MMI scholarship and 1/4 paid by USMMA, leaving us with the remaining 1/4. I agree that the process is long and complicated to weed out the less dedicated. I hope you are correct about the 'golden ticket' and our DS gets an appointment this year, he has wanted to attend the academy for many years and excited to play baseball for Coach Notebaert.

I'm not sure how this helps with plan B. You could go ahead and lock in plan B now with a room and board deposit etc. You're not obligated to show up and if an appointment were to come along your child could accept it. You can always ask for the deposit back but you may, or may not, get it. A small price to pay for "insurance".

KP_KP I believe you can find the numbers, either on this forum, or possibly on MMI's site or direct from them. I believe they had 100% last year of those that stuck it out?? with the exception of one sponsored who left the program after one week. But, be forewarned, the prep appointments for USMMA seem to come at the very end.

I was on hold until May. Stay strong. I know the wait is terrible - I've been there. Best of luck!
