Hi all!
A couple days ago I posted about receiving a CVW invitation and after reading some similar threads I noticed that some candidates had the opportunity to stay with a plebe who plays their sports and/or meet with a coach. I wrestle, but as of current the Naval Academy doesn’t have a women’s wrestling team, club or d1. I am considering contacting either the rugby or boxing coaches to let them know my background and that I’m interested in their program. However, I’ve never played rugby nor have I boxed, but I’m planning to try them out this summer, as they are both similar to wrestling in some respects. Is this reaching on my part? Should I wait until after my CVW to decide whether or not I want to play a sport st the Academy? I’m currently a junior and I still have my senior year to make decisions, so I may be jumping the gun on this one but I just want to be diligent.
Sorry for the long post [emoji4] thanks to anyone who reads and replies

I don't think there is any benefit to reaching out to coaches of sports that you have never participated in. They aren't going to recruit you without experience.

Nor does she know if she will like them or perform
at a ufficient level.

Actually, you can wait a lot longer than that. During your Plebe summer, you will be exposed to any number of sports you may be interested in pursuing including countless other Club and Intramural programs that you may have never thought about before being exposed to them.....fencing anyone?

You'll have ample opportunity to explore your interests along with determining each respective program requirement and how that fits into your background/talents to participate. It's one of the few schools that affords you that opportunity then so there's no need to make a decision this far in advance.

Rugby and boxing are club sports. They aren’t going to have recruiting power to help with admissions at the club level. Most rugby players at USNA have never played. As a wrestler you are physical, know how to use your body weight and aren’t afraid of contact. Guessing you would transition well to rugby, if you enjoyed it. They will teach you the game. Lots of Mids have also never boxed. You will find a wide array of novice to advanced boxers at USNA. While on your CVW ask your Mid if they know anyone playing these sports that you could talk to. You have lots of time to explore these sports and figure out if one of them is right or not.

Would I have to ask in advance or just ask around while I’m there?

Your pick. You can email the coach and introduce yourself. They will probably tell ya to come by practice and watch while on your CVW. Meet the team. Don’t over think this. Tell your host what you hope to learn about and they can help you find other Mids to talk to.

Ok thank you so much. I’ll probably send an email two weeks in advance of my visit

As Sydney c stated, lots of opportunities to explore lots of different things and find your niche plebe summer. A friends DD tried rowing for the first time and is on the varsity rowing team! But yes, a club sport coach doesn’t recruit.

At USNA there are 3 levels of sport: Varsity, Club and Intramural. Varsity isn’t the only sport that travels!

There are also a lot of other EC’s: gospel choir, drum and bugle to name a few off the top of my head. You may find interest in something else beyond sports.

My post is West Point specific, but may also apply to USNA. My son had the opportunity to meet coaches, tour facilities, and get info on several other things during his overnight. His sponsor took him to some of these places, and an officer in admissions to him to a few others. Ask them to take you...

Also, consider the Judo Team....you'll find your wrestling skills will allow you to compete right away.

Good luck. Beat Navy :)

Does anyone know if sprint football recruits? I played defensive tackle as a very undersized lineman, and I'd really like to keep on playing.

Honest answer is not really. Usually it’s an active duty Marine who coaches the team. They will conduct try outs for the team during Plebe Summer. Make sure you read up on weight requirements. It’s a fun sport to watch! A fast game.

Just to clear up one point recruiting for athletic recruits vs. a coach recruiting Mids to join the the team are different. One is what everyone thinks of. The other is there are tons of teams, sports and ECAs at USNA. There aren’t that many Mids in reality. They are all competing for Mids to join their team or ECA. This isn’t high school either. You can’t do a club sport and 6 ECAs. Don’t join too many activities. Find one or two items that speak to you and focus there, it’s really all you have time for.

You need to assess how good you are to figure out if you're someone they might jump at. From what I've seen, the Sprint players have a similar background to the regular football types. They guys who seem to make the sprint team have great records in HS football, they just aren't the bigger guys. As NavyHoops said, they don't recruit much but a lot of the guys who make the team seem to have "All County/Area/etc" type credentials

I’m going to jump in on this one, although my question is slightly different. I have received and accepted an offer of appointment, and I have interest in playing golf at the academy. I played varsity golf all throughout high school, and even exchanged some emails with the Navy golf coach. My question is- how / when do try outs get announced and will equipment be provided? I know this is a relatively distant problem to be concerned about, but I was wondering how this is dealt with.

I would wait until closer to Plebe Summer and reach out again to the coach. Ask them how try outs are handled and how to handle the gear question. My guess is they have the new Plebes bring gear prior to I Day or they will tell you to have your parents bring it Parents Weekend. During the summer during sports time, not sure what the golf team does. My guess is work on their swing, flexibility and strength. Be surprised if they get to the course, but can work on fundamentals around the yard. Halsey used to have some large nets they would hit into.

I had a friend who was going to try out for the (very competitive) tri-team. He had to have his bike shipped out plebe summer. Yikes! But it was done!! He ultimately didn’t, too much time requirements for practice. He chose IM basketball and gospel choir instead and has travelled and sang at some pretty neat places!!

There are lots of different choir groups, but men’s, women’s and gospel choir all travel and it’s a big time commitment. Mids who do it, generally love if. They do go to some grays places and sing at some amazing events!

Brand new plebe singing on national tv for Senator McCains funeral was pretty amazing....
