CGAS appointment

I’ve been offered a conditional appointment to the CGAS program (waiting on my DoDMERB) and I plan to accept. Does anyone have any info on the prep schools? (GMC, NAPS, MMI) any info would help.
Thanks!
Congratulations, my DS is currently at GMC on the CGAS program and I am pleased he has gotten a year to improve and grow and to ensure he has success when he attends the academy.

I can't speak highly enough of this opportunity. You and your family should be really proud!

If you have any questions feel free to PM me! Well done again!

I teach and sponsor the CGAS at MMI. You can start off by checking out the websites of both GMC and MMI online. Do Not Apply to the schools yet! You'll be informed in April or May what school you'll be assigned to. Then you can get your application and paperwork in. You'll be automatically accepted at either the military junior colleges.

I'd also suggest a campus visit if you are able. Both MMI and GMC will be happy to give you tours and tell you more about the schools. I'm afraid I can't speak to NAPS as it's a DoD school, but I'm sure you can get more information from their website as well.

Congratulations!

Congrats! If you are a lax recruit as your screen name suggests, you may very well end up at NAPS. I don't believe the others have a lax team. There is no guarantee this will be the case, however.

I have know multiple classmates that went to the MMI (Marion Military Institute), asked all about how it was and none seemed to recommend it. It's in a rural area in Alabama, I wouldn't explore that place further if I were you.

Many cadets at USCGA have gone through MMI. Most looking back are glad they had the “opportunity” to do so. My DS was grateful for the time spent at MMI and felt it gave him a leg up on direct appointees. He even said during swab that there was a bit of jealousy among them of those who had spent a year in CGAS......regardless of it being rural or urban.

Thank you everyone for the replies!
What I’m wondering is what I should be doing at this point to prepare. I’m currently doing the Bears 8 week fitness program to get ready for summer orientation but I want to be prepared academically as well. My intended major is Government, will that be a factor in which prep school I will be sent to?

If you accept a CGAS appointment, you don't have any control over where they send you, so feelings and preferences are immaterial.

Intended major won't be a factor. I have prospective government, MES, ORCA, and engineer here. The prep curriculum is precalculus math, physics, chemistry, and composition, and is designed for you to be ready for your 4/c year. Your best bet academically is to keep working on your high school courses, especially math.

On the physical side, get yourself heat acclimated the best you can. Summers in Alabama and Georgia can be brutal, and Newport has been known to have a heat wave or three.

finish the school year strong, work out and run religiously, and you will be fine. The summer will be more mental than physical. Government majors still get a bachelor of science degree from CGA, so you will have to pass Calc I, Chemistry and other sciences. Seek extra help in those areas if you feel like you need it, to make your CGAS and 4c year easier.

@laxerc - First congratulations!!! My son is currently at NAPS with the CGAS program and it’s been the best experience. Your intended major should not have a factor about which prep school you get assigned to. If you are a recruited athlete, that might be the deciding factor. The academics at prep generally cover the core classes - Math, English, Chem, and Physics. You will get tested at the CGA during orientation and that is part of the factor in placement levels for each class. Prep academics is building a strong foundation in those classes but in the way CGA will be teaching them. You will have plenty of academic support at prep school.

As far as getting prepared, as others have mentioned, finish your senior year out strong and get in the best physical shape you can. Make sure to run consistently. The physical is grueling during INDOC and you don’t want to be dealing with injuries. The next thing is have fun!!! Sleep in, have fun with your friends, enjoy freedom!!! The second you start prep school it all changes. Some of the biggest challenges are going to be the ones you can’t get prepared for. Balancing military life, academics, sports, being on duty at 3am before class, and being “on” all the time! Prep year is all about learning!

Thank you everyone for the advice!
I just thought of a few more questions regarding CGAS.
Although I don’t know what prep I will be going to yet, what is life like at them? Is it more like a 4/c year at CGA? I know it will be challenging due to the fact that they’re trying to prepare you for SWAB summer and the following year, but I’m trying to get a sense of what life is like, how much “freedom” you have, etc...

MMI is like high school with a little military drilling sprinkled in. Tons of freeedom. They have a good faculty and many nice club activities such as diving and flight training. There’s plenty of freedom.....make sure to stay focused.

I have also received a full appointment to the CGAS program for the upcoming year and have accepted my offer. I am a recruited rower to the Academy and plan on entering as an MES major. Does anyone know when exactly we find out which prep school we will be attending and how they are decided? Thanks!

School assignments will likely be made around end of April to mid May. You'll likely get an e-mail around that time.

Last year, my DS received his prep school assignment in mid May.

@laxerc - NAPs is a little different because it is on an active military base and is run as a military prep school. Set schedule from early morning until lights out at night. Some liberty on weekends but with military regulations.

I know little or nothing about CGAS, maybe someone here can enlighten me?? It seems from reading those threads I could find that CGAS is meant to strengthen a candidate's academic credentials? Does getting selected and accepting CGAS guarantee a spot in the Class of 2024, or does it just help with next years application? And finally, if anyone can help, does it make a difference if a candidate is already considered academically qualified, whether or not they attend CGAS or a civilian university to start on their major? Thanks in advance....this is not an option we were aware of.
