I'm really wondering. I'd prefer to go Army ROTC at Wheaton College Illinois but my parents are strict and really want me to go to West Point ever since I got the nomination from my congressman

Academic: 3.81 Weighted GPA (however, I got 2 C pluses my first semester due to difficult classes but my GPA actually went up from a 3.78), 26 ACT, National English Honor Society, Chinese National Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society

Currently taking: AP Literature, AP Comp Gov, AP Psych, Calculus Honors, American Politics Honors, Statistics Honors, Gym

Leadership: SGA President of my school, SGA Secretary of my school. SGA Cabinet Member, Class President, SGA Representative, Boys State (Assemblyman, 3rd highest office acquired, NJ), Military PT Club founder/Platoon Leader, TaeKwonDo Master's Assistant, Church Basketball team coach/founder, Small Group leader and Activity Coordinator at Church

CFA: 59 Pushups (choked on 2 minute test, i usually get 70-75), 58 situps, 6 pullups (can do 18 now), 6:47 mile, 72 ft basketball throw, 8.7 sec shuttle run

ROTC PFA (1 minute test): 64 pushups, 49 situps, 6:45 mile

Athletic: 2 First-Degree Blackbelts in TaeKwonDo and MMA, JV Track, JV Cross Country, Freshman Basketball, Captain of Church basketball team

Community Service: 600+ hours with Church

I have received the 3 year Army ROTC Scholarship and a nomination to USMA in one of the most competitive districts in the nation

Please be brutally honest!

Black belt in TaeKwonDo ... black belt in MMA (whatever that means) ... and only 58 sit-ups and 6 pull-ups?

You can do 18 now ... did you resubmit your CFA with the higher number?

I agree. This is your life. Not mom and dad's.

If your heart is not truly in it, your chances for success at USMA diminish greatly.

I have not, and for situps I can do like 70 now

I have been telling them that but since my brother is at the Naval Academy, they expect me to take the "more prestigious" offer if i were to get in

And I'm not sure about my two C+'s, like how that would affect. (USMA looks at mid year grades)

Sounds like you didn’t put forth your best effort to get in.
I took the CFA in November. And I have during that time. Now, it's "I'm just waiting for the decision".

The point of improving those numbers would be to resubmit them.

In regards to the CFA I will provide a comparison:
My first time applying to academies, I had the following CFA scores for USMA:
Push-ups:58
sit-ups: 72
Mile: 6:55
BB throw: 75ft
Shuttle:9.0
Pull-ups: 18 Max
I was told that my CFA could use improvement. My current scores are as follows:
Push-ups: 72
Sit-ups:85
Mile: 6:18
BB throw: 82 ft
Shuttle: 8.6
Pull-ups: 18 Max
These scores could use some work but I was told they are above average.
As far as your parents pressuring you, my parents wanted me to go to USAFA but I wanted USNA. I received a nomination to USAFA but was not selected last year. Truth be told, even if USAFA or USMA accepted me I would have declined it because it's not what I, again what I, wanted. It's your life, make your own choices on what you would like to do, especially when considering a military career. My parents aren't happy that I want to join the Marines, but it is my choice at the end of the day.

I still really want to be an Army officer but I still want to have a regular college experience while pursing a commission. Plus I have already made really good friends at the ROTC school

You are definitely a strong candidate for West Point and will have a good chance of getting in, maybe the ACT score is a bit low but that’s too late to change. Honestly you sound like you would be more successful as a cadet in ROTC because West Point will be an awful experience if it isn’t something YOU want. Best of luck on decisions though.

Thank you! and you think my 2 Cs first semester will impact my standing?

The fact that you received a nomination to USMA in one of the most competitive districts in the nation and hold a three year Army ROTC scholarship shows that you are well rounded. The C’s might hurt on admission to a regular college and West Point because other candidates will have received better grades. I am not an expert on admissions, however, your extracurricular activities and 600+ hours of community service differentiate you from other candidates that I have personally seen. Make sure you get those grades up second semester but don’t put yourself down due to poor grades because you are still a solid candidate: just don’t make that mistake again!

I got those Cs 1st semester of Senior year. Calculus and AP Psych have been hard for me. I have already got in my top ROTC school but i can see it hurting for USMA

The fact of the matter is that you never know what goes on behind the scenes at the admissions office of the various service academies. The C’s were in your harder classes which is definitely better than receiving a C in gym, but it still isn’t great. It may or may not hurt your chances, we just never know.

Have you visited West Point or done an overnight stay? I think if you visit the campus and maybe go to a sporting event it might invigorate your desire to attend USMA. Watching videos on YouTube will give you somewhat of an idea of how it will be like. I also recommend buying “a game of honor” which is a football mini-series that shows life as a football player at USMA or USNA.

I've visited 4 times and been to the Army Navy game before.

Nothing wrong with wanting the college experience, there are many kids who would want that. I, personally, just fell in love with the atmosphere that service academies surround themselves with and am willing to give up things like parties, free time, and so on to kickstart my dreams. I was accepted to Norwich and the Citadel, but I just couldn't afford to go. I wanted to attend the Citadel and who knows, I probably would have stayed there if I liked it a lot. Some people just want to do the regular college life and go to OCS afterward, there is nothing wrong with that! Make the best decision for yourself and have fun doing it. Life's too short to have what-if's, pursue what you love. I wish you the best going forward!
