I've been medically disqualified for a little less than a month and my application was mostly completed by November in accordance with the deadlines USAFA gave me. If a waiver process has not yet been initiated, is it safe to say that USAFA ismost likely not interested in pursuing one on my behalf? I've heard that waiver processes take quite a while and being that it is already mid February.

Hello fellow candidate,

I was in your shoes not long ago. I understand the waiting is pretty terrible. That being said I would definitely start asking your ALO/Air Force Admissions counselor. Luckily I got my waiver requested and approved a while back but the process was somewhat lengthy (about a month and a half). But before I got my waiver I did some research and talked to my ALO to see what I can do. They basically told me the academy will request a waiver if they deem a candidate "competitive enough". I realize this does little or nothing to ease your nerves (it didn't for me) but those are the facts. However, I wouldn't give up hope as you haven't been DQ that long really, not that I know that much about this process other than what I've been told by people on this forum and my ALO. If I were you I would try contacting your admissions counselor even if there is little you will get from it other than a "sit tight", as its not up to the admissions counselors to request waivers. As always take what you hear from me and everyone else in this forum with a grain of salt, and remember the saying, "you're never out until you get a TWE!" (not that that helps in any shape or form with nerves you might be feeling).

From one humble applicant to another Good luck, I sincerely hope you get a waiver soon.

I actually did email my Admissions Counselor. I pretty got a "sit tight" as a reply though. Anyways, Thanks!

Hello.
I was in a similar situation as you. I finished my application by mid-late October. I only just recently (either in late January or early February) was contacted by USAFA about starting the waiver process.

I completed my part of the medical process in the end of July or early August. I got my status around late September. So it was many months before a waiver was requested.

What is a TWE?

Thin white envelope. Rejection letter.

What is a TWE?

Thin White Envelope, when notification of non-acceptance came in a sadly slim piece of US mail. Now, it’s usually an electronic “The Worst Email.”

BFE is the Big Fat Envelope of offer of appointment and other papers. This can also be electronic at some stage or at some SA.

You may want to check out The Acronym List in the Community section here on SAF.

Have you heard back? Do you get a waiver. My DS has to sit tight now and we are still waiting. Wondering how long it will take as it’s almost March.

How long have you been waiting? It’s been three weeks for me since they have sent my AMI to be processed.

2 weeks, AF portal says medically disqualified and no waiver has been issued till now.

My DS AFA portal shows Candidate, Complete but Medically DQ'd and his DoDMERB portal shows he has had a "pending waiver submission/review" status since October, 2018 when DoDMERB was completed and they listed him as DQ'd b/c of scoliosis, that he's been treated for since 2016. He is an accomplished two sport athlete, American Kenpo Black-Belt and did very well on the AFA CFA. All that's waiting in his application now is a waiver and appointment, if the AFA finds him worthy. All of his medical records have been submitted to DoDMERB (DS assigned Medical Technician) at the request of Deputy Chief Dr. Larry Mullen last Fall, which states he is physically capable of doing any activities required by the USAF/A and is asympotmatic. We have reviewed the WPAFB and he appears to be ineligable for waiver consideration for FC I/IA, but is eligable under FC II/IIU. That said, we have heard nothing at this time from anyone and are curious if we shoud do more, but in the past as he tried to ask questions of his USAFA Counselor, and they said he can do nothing, but wait. We do not want to overstep, but we don't want to drop the ball either. Sincere, experienced advice would be appreciated??

Don't fret....It's the waiting game. As @Capt MJ indicated, until your get that TWE, you are still in the game..:) Check out some of the different "waiver" threads. You will see time frames run from 2 weeks to 9 months. If you have an LOA or LOE you are in better shape.

Congrats on the waiver. I'd say that I've been waiting for a about a little over a month now.

I looked through a few of the waiver threads a while back. I did see time frames like those you've mentioned (2 weeks to 9 months) but they seem to have been referring to the time that it took for a waiver that had already been initiated to be granted. The time frame was also what concerned me being that there are only so many more days before the deadline for joining the class of 2023 passes.

I unfortunately have neither an LOA nor an LOE, but I went on something called the FVE(Falcon Visitation Experience) this past fall. I'm not sure if it has any impact though. From what I remember, they more or less told us that we were selected because we were diverse or something along those lines.

Thank you though. I will definitely look in the waivers thread and see if I can find any more info.
