Room and Board

University of Idaho offers a $5000 credit towards room and board for all ROTC scholarship cadets renewable each year they choose to live on campus.

Some ROTC scholarships offer free or discounted room and board through the schools. Most of the schools I applied to for the Army ROTC scholarship offered the free room and board incentive.
What schools did you apply for?

Montana State has tuition waivers for 3yr National Winners. High quality, non-select. Talk with my ROO and we usually float $1-4000 for room/board.

I've mentioned this before. George Washington's room and board is about $13,000 per year. ROTC scholarship recipients receive an $8,000 discount. Paying only $5,000 per year for GWU is amazing!

I saw this (see below) on the GOARMY website.
Is it true that NYU and Columbia cap their tuition scholarship at $35,000??

This school offers the following additional incentives to students taking Army ROTC :
  • PARTNERSHIP SCHOOLS: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY | NEW YORK UNIVERSITY | CITY COLLEGE | IONA COLLEGE | JOHN JAY COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE | MARIST COLLEGE | NEW SCHOOL | POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
  • Fordham University offers free rooms to cadets receiving Army ROTC scholarships.
  • Full Tuition Scholarships, as much as $35,000 PER YEAR, are offered at high cost schools such as Columbia University, New York University, and Fordham University.

Is it accurate based on prior posts that Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach campus offers some 4 year AROTC students Room and Board and tuition , while 4 year AFROTC or NROTC scholarship winners are not afforded the same? If you happen, to know, please advise. Thanks!

I understand GWU's $8k scholarship only applies to Engineering majors. $4k for others.

What about the campus in Prescott AZ?

Prescott does provide room and board assistance for 4 year winners - please contact the campus to confirm your exact details. It's also nicely spelled out on their website. https://prescott.erau.edu/rotc/air-force/scholarships/

Four-Year Scholarship
If you are an incoming freshman, you may qualify for a full-tuition scholarship to attend Embry-Riddle Prescott.

High school seniors are encouraged to apply for the Army ROTC four-year scholarship through the national selection process. If a high school senior is awarded a four-year or three-year Advanced Designee scholarship while still in high school, they will receive room and board assurance money from Embry-Riddle that will activate when the scholarship goes into effect.

On-campus scholarships are awarded after a student has enrolled in Army ROTC and applied for and qualified for the scholarship. Campus-based scholarships pay for tuition and fees (it does not pay for flight fees), a monthly stipend for 10 months, and a book allowance each semester.

//to confirm, for Daytona Beach, there is additional funding but not full room/ board for Navy and Air Force scholarhip recipients. Also AROTC full room board only goes to 4 year scholarship winners per their detachment office.

It's a little confusing as to what colleges offer free R&B, few colleges mention they offer free or discounted R&B on their ROTC websites. Other schools don't mention a word? Does anyone know if Boston U, Rice U, & U of Rochester are generous with their R&B scholarships?

I can vouch that the University of Rochester (NROTC) covers 100% of room AND board costs. That's about as generous as you can get.

Does anyone have any insight to NROTC scholarship coverage at Vanderbilt University? I saw some previous posts that indicated additional monies to assist with room and board costs. But that was from several years ago....
Thanks in advance.

The current NROTC FAQ from Vandy indicates probably not.

You might still call Vanderbilt and inquire with their PNS and Financial Aid department to be sure.

My DD got a 4 year AROTC scholarship. One of the schools cadet command gave her as a choice was Vandy.

I am almost positive it was the Vandy ROO who called my DD and told her the school will throw in either $3000 or $6000 extra towards room and board for scholarship winners.

I bet if the school does that for AROTC scholarship winners, then they would also do for NROTC.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere..... If you accept a 4YR AROTC Scholarship and your school DOES NOT provide room and board, can you use Pell Grants, Scholarship money, State Academic Awards money, or VA benefits to pay for room and board? I have seen the lists of colleges and the AROTC benefits they provide compiled on some of these threads, but none of them indicate if Room and Board is not fully paid, what other options are available beside student loans?

It depends on the scholarship. Some scholarships have specific rules about how the funds can be used and others are quite liberal.

Best solution is to reach out to the financial aid department at the college of choice and inquire about aid for room and board. Another common solution is working as an RA in the dorms for free housing. Between the ROO and financial aid department, you should be able to get the best answers.
