Awarded AFROTC Scholarship

type 7 is full tuition for in-state

I don't know if things have changed, but if they haven't that is incorrect. The fine print use to say something akin to the equivalent cost of IS. So if they choose to go to a private school and the tuition cost is the same as your IS cost than you can use it. If it is even a penny more than you will need to convert to a 3 yr Type 2.

Also everyone remember that they will state if it is tech. If it doesn't state tech than you can go non-tech too. Beware if you are awarded a tech and later on choose to switch to non-tech you need to get approval from HQ AFROTC. It is rare they will approve the switch and let you keep the scholarship

Congrats to all! It looks like the boards are releasing results early this yr.

A few pieces of advice for the recipients
1. If you have yet to take the DoDMERB exam. Get your medical records in order. IF you have not been formally diagnosed by a doctor with a medical issue than do not say it.
~ IE eczema can be a DQ. Don't check that box unless your medical records state you indeed have eczema. Just like some kids at 12 had a bronchial infection and the doc erred on the cautious side by saying it maybe asthma, prescribing an inhaler. You never went for further testing and never used the inhaler. That maybe was just that a maybe. If this sounds familiar, make an apptmt with your family doc and get a true answer, have them document it in your medical files.
~~ Documentation prior to the exam will help a little when it comes to a remedial. Remedials typically are either send in your records or see a specialist. Either way you covered your bases.
2. Bubble Wrap
~ It is a common joke. In essence, it means still play sports and have fun, but don't do something foolish.
~~ A few yrs ago a kid was playing volleyball 4th of July. They HAD to get that ball for the save, fell twisted their knee. They were cleared originally with DoDMERB. now a few weeks prior to school starting and activating the scholarship, they are now in a medical abyss. They couldn't activate the scholarship since they are no longer medically cleared. They were able to start ROTC, but could not do the PFT. It was Oct b4 they got the all clear from the docs. and paperwork sent to DoDMERB. It was @ Thanksgiving when they were cleared. Dec. when they took the PFT and signed. During those months they did not get a stipend. Their tuition was basically placed on hold, along with the books. The school had spring registration in Nov. Since the tuition was not pd, the school placed a lock on their account until AFROTC said yea or nay. They were looking at their spring schedule being messed up as classes filled. This is a worse case scenario, but it is important to understand even a fun thing that you have done 100 times can impact your future.
3. Keep working out
~ Run in the a.m. with little sleep. Run in the high heat of the day. Run when it is spitting rain.
~~ Your 1st impression will be your PFT. Many cadets enjoy their summer, and rightfully so. However, they don't realize that those months off running will slow down their time, especially when it comes to reality. As a candidate you selected the date to do your PFA. As a cadet it will be chosen for you. As a candidate at home with folks, lights out at 11, up for school at 6:30. As a cadet in a dorm (non-SMC) lights out are whenever you shut off the lights, but PT will be 6-6:30, meaning if you go to sleep at 1 a.m., and you have to be up at 5:30 for PT at 6 a.m. you are working out with 4 hrs of sleep.
~~~Do the PFA in order and FORM. Your PFA administer may just count the sit ups and push ups, but the cadre will count only the proper form. If it is not the AF way it will not count and you are wasting valuable energy.
Hope that helps. Again congrats. Now time to think about the next few steps.
I sent you a PM. It looks like this has changed.
I got it. It is a change. As I stated, it does come down to wording. In this case it appears IF they are public it is now a no go even if they charge IS rates.
To me the big thing is it comes down to IS. There is a sticky here. It shows schools and the perks they offer to ROTC students/scholarship recipients.
I would suggest you also call the FA/Bursar to find out if you go ROTC will they charge you IS even if you are OOS.
Our DS had a type 2 non-tech. We contacted his college to see if they would charge IS. His Det won best largest det 2x within 5 yrs., just saying it wasn't a small unit. They said NO, he would be charged OOS. Had he applied to TAMU or other colleges he had the chance of them charging IS, and we wouldn't have had to worry about paying the difference from IS and OOS.
Just saying time to do a deep delve and talk to their schools. Don't just assume.
The list is long.
Note it is also old. Hence, if your school is on the list contact them directly to make sure it has not changed.
Not correct. Type 7 is for public school only. The emails received by the kids clearly say this.
I assume it can still be converted to a 3 year type 2 that could be used at a private institution. The web site still indicates that. Do the letters say anything different?
My daughter received a type 7 technical AFROTC scholarship as well The school she is choosing will give her in state tuition and pay for housing. Which means she’s getting a full ride. Good luck everyone!!
Congrats! Our son also received the Type 7 Scholarship - just curious, which school has your daughter chosen to attend? We'll need to research all of the potential Room/Board benefits at his accepted schools.
Does anyone know how long it usually takes for DoDMERB to contact the scholarship recipients?
I read somewhere that they will contact within 2 weeks; I assume they have not contacted yet, because it is the weekend.
Edit: Here it is.
CRITICAL: IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED BY DODMERB TO SCHEDULE YOUR MEDICAL EXAM WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF RECEIVING THIS NOTIFICATION PACKAGE, CONTACT THEM IMMEDIATELY AT 1-800-841-2706.
Is it safe to assume that I have a good shot at an appointment to USAFA because I’ve received an AFROTC type 2 scholarship. I figured since AFROTC is a national competition and doesn’t care about state representation, it might be a tad bit more competitive. Or is this not the case?
Yes, you have a good shot, but I would not be considering it anywhere close to a lock in.
Type 2 is something to be proud of, it is @15% of all recipients. It is a true feather in your cap. Congrats.
However, please remember that if you are not charged to your MoC or another source than you will be thrown into the national pool.
Plus, remember the final issues.
1. 12th grade
~ AFROTC does not take into account your senior yr. USAFA does. That includes not only your course curriculum, or your cgpa, but also your ECs.
2. USAFA superscores the SAT/ACT, but AFROTC does not. It sounds strange, but maybe a cadet has a best sitting of 31 and wants non-tech, gets a type 7. However, they superscore 34 and you scored superscore of 32. You won AFROTC, yet since USAFA doesn't care about major, while they care about superscore, they win there.
3. CFA vs PFA
4. Interview
It all comes down to the WCS. Do I believe you have a strong chance for an appointment? YES!
~ Would I not sign the AFROTC paperwork? NO
~ Would I place a deposit at the school, even with and appointment? Yes.
JMPO and with $2.07 you can get a burger from McDonalds.
I was awarded a 4 year type 7 technical scholarship (Oregon). The closest detatchment to me was University of Portland so that is where my interview was conducted. I heard from some folks that also interviewed that the cadre were very impressed by my interview, and I just got a phone call from the detachment offering me the Commander's scholarship for the school. UP wasn't really my ideal school, and I was pretty set on just going to OSU. I am curious though, are there any benefits (aside from simply a full ride) that the CLS has over an ROTC scholarship? The CLS at UP covers room and board and all of the above, and I know the tpye 7 does not. I was just wondering if the CLS made any difference, maybe later on it the program (?) with SFT or what not. Thanks for all the help!
