Hello,
I was reading where VMI encourages cadets to be active in clubs, athletic or otherwise. I have been trying to find information on what types of non-sport clubs are currently available. It was stated somewhere that VMI has over 50 clubs, but their website only mentions the following:

"At VMI, cadets are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and clubs. Cadet clubs are an opportunity to serve, compete, and develop leadership skills.
Extracurricular options include Club Sports, Civil War Roundtable, Marksmanship Club, Regimental Band, Search and Rescue Squad, The Bomb Yearbook, Fishing Club, Soaring Club, Ranger Challenge, Semper Fi Society, Firefighters, Brass Ensemble, Glee Club, Ethics Club, Keydets Without Borders, and VMI Theater. "

Does anyone have any information regarding any additional clubs? Also, any comments or opinions on a particular club?

Thanks

novajoe -- my info comes from observing my DS and his BRs at VMI, thus it is not first hand

VMI does seem to have some good clubs and the staff seem supportive of forming new clubs provided there is enough interest. Of the ones you listed, the EMT / Search & Rescue, the Bomb Yearbook, Ranger Challenge, Regimental Band, Brass Ensemble, Glee Club / Men in Grey, VMI Theater and Keydets without Borders seem to be very active. I think there is also an active equestrian riding club and a paintball team.

As for "Club Sports", Boxing, Rugby, Hockey, Lacrosse, and Soccer all seem to do very well

For Boxing and Rugby, there is no "NCAA" governing body so these 2 "Club Sports" are almost run like a "varsity" sport.

VMI won the National Championship in Boxing 3 years ago I think, and has placed in the finals the past year or 2. https://www.wsls.com/sports/vmi-boxing-among-the-best-in-nation_20170413102221614

In Rugby, VMI went to the Men's Division 2 National Championship in 2018 finishing 2nd in the Nation, and last year finished the season ranked 17th in the Nation out of approximately 115 teams. https://www.vmi.edu/news/headlines/2017-2018/rugby-team-competes-in-championships.php

VMI Club Lacrosse recently went to the National playoffs, but not sure how deep they went. https://www.vmi.edu/news/headlines/2017-2018/club-lacrosse-vies-for-championship.php

My observation is that the VMI club program is vibrant, well supported by the Institute and has good supervision. Current VMI cadets will have more and better knowledge.

What are you interested in? There is a wide range of clubs and activities some more active than others. There are professional groups like the pre law society or cadet investment group. There are military groups like Ranger Challenge or Semper Fi. There are faith groups like Baptist Canpus or Newman Club.

this.
VMI has a lot of opportunities to make friends and connect. My son is in Men In Grey (an all male A Capella group), he is also part of the Worship Team at post Chapel. Music is his joy.

There is a running club. They have done a lot of half marathons, the Army 10 Miler, The Marine Corp Marathon. I don't beleive you have to run long distances to join..

There are also many available bible studies, if you are so inclind.

I think some of the major departments also have groups / clubs that do things within that particular major.

There really is no shortage of things to do, you just have to try different things and see what you enjoy and who you connect with.

Nothing in particular. Just interested in what is offered. It is nice to know there are many options and they sound like they are well run.

Might I also add that there is a VMI strings club for any strings players out there :) We've been to two gigs this year, one in a local nursing home and another all the way out in Norfolk. It's a great time.

thanks, I did not know that! that's awesome.

I hope I'm not too late! Honestly there are an abundance of extracurriculars at VMI. For example, I know a cadet that plays Club Baseball, holds rank, attends Corps Bible Study, sits on the Cadet-Superintendent Advisory Board, plays an instrument for the Cadet Chapel, and participates in the drone club. BUT this is a single example, as others before have mentioned, there are pre-professional societies, academic fraternities, club sports, the list goes on. Hope I can help!
