Couple questions....

I’m a sophomore in high school, but am currently deciding on different options for classes next year.

1. I’m taking Physics 1 Junior year. With that being said, I have the option to pick between AP Chem and Physics 2 Senior year, (I don’t think Physics 2 is AP). Which one would be the better option for USMA?

2. I’ve been in orchestra since 6th grade, and have many achievements through playing the violin. Would it be worthwile to stay in that class, is there any use for the violin in USMA? It’s a .4 class and an easy A and GPA booster, but it takes up space I could be using for Computer Sceince and such.

3. For junior year, I’ll be taking IB Spanish (my fourth year of spanish). Would it be of any use to take a fifth year, or take another class for Senior year? (Thinking about AP 20th Century World History).

4. What options does the academy have for computer science related majors?

1. I'd take AP Chem. Academies want to see that you're challenging yourself in advanced science classes. Plus, you will want to have both chemistry and physics under your belt. I've taken both and don't regret it.

2. I think you should definitely stay in it. Music/band/chorus is something USMA admissions values. Especially if you've racked up awards in it, it will boost your application. I was in band and I got a section leader position out of it which I imagine didn't hurt my WCS.

3. I can't speak from the experience of others but I dropped Spanish my senior year (been taking it since 6th) in favor of some other classes. One of the better decisions I've made in high school. But if you're interested in potentially majoring or minoring in it, maybe stick with it.

4. With the recent addition of the Cyber branch the Academy appears to have turned some more focus to that specific portion of STEM. Looking at the majors and minors page (https://www.usma.edu/academics/majors-and-minors) they offer a Computer Science major and also minors in Cyber Security, Robotics, and Networking/telecommunications.

DS had the exact same scenario/question as your #1, wrote to admissions for advice, and they recommended APChem over AP Physics 2.
