My DS has been offered and has accepted an appointment to the USMA. He had also previously been awarded a 4-year AROTC. Today he received a voice mail from the detachment of the school he would have attended asking if he had accepted his appointment and if so to please decline the scholarship so someone else could take advantage. DS wants another deserving candidate to be able to use it and are assuming that if he brakes or tears something before R-Day and becomes med. dq'ed from USMA he would most likely also be med. dq'ed for ARTOC. Is our thinking correct? Any reason why he wouldn't want to go ahead and decline the scholarship?

He might be DQed for AROTC, but he would have a somewhat longer time to recover from his injury for AROTC, so who knows? It really depends on how serious the injury is. He earned his scholarship and he earned the right to keep it for the time being if he wants. I'm confident once he reports to the academy that the money will become available for someone else at that time. Perhaps it would be for an in-school scholarship for some deserving cadet. He needn't worry about the money being put to good use somewhere.

Echo Kinney, with the academy, either he academy, he could be injured from something minor on report day and still be out of luck, while with ROTC as long as he could pass the APFT his scholarship would start and then a medical determination would be made based on the long term nature of the injury. These are really big decisions to be made! Most likely he will be healthy when he reports and this isn’t an issue but he definitely should not feel guilty about keeping his scholarship in his back pocket.

Now if he doesn’t reserve a spot at that university through admissions, then that is maybe a different issue because he might not be able to report for school anyway, and maybe that is why the school contacted him?

Doesn't he have until May 1 for his college decision, though? My feeling is he might want to wait as long as possible before declining - circumstances can and do change.
