I moved to candidate status in early July. I think that’s pretty typical, but maybe someone else can chime in with their experience.

+1 to AF Warrior. If you are competitive, you'll get an email telling you to check your portal. The portal will have a Candidate letter and a checklist to complete with deadline dates.

I sent in my Pre-Candidate Questionnaire April 12th and heard back July 07th about being a Candidate. So if you just sent yours in, I would say you should hear back as early as June-July time. Being an applicant and competitive is good, it means you're starting out on the right track. From my experience, its a good place to be in.

For me, I send in the PCQ on May 15th and got a message in my portal on May 16th that "you have potential for admission, and we will be sending you additional instructions in July." They started promoting people to candidate status on July 1st, 2018 for class of 2023.

I checked my portal today regarding regular application status and my status is listed as "applicant*" including the asterisk and that my application is "pending review". Down underneath it states that when you submit an application you are listed as "prospect" and when it is being reviewed it is then changed to "applicant". Searching some more it seems that the switch from "applicant" to "candidate" will happen around the 1st of July. Best of luck to you!

To add onto this, I used the questionnaire they offered for Summer Seminar as the baseline for my formal application too, so I had it submitted Jan. 13th, if that is of any use to you.

In regards to candidate status, should my DS wait until July to send in transcripts and seek nomination or get started now? He has been accepted to USMA SLE and is waitlisted for USAF SLE.

Wait for DS to be moved to candidate status (which will open his candidate portal) to start sending anything to USAFA. I would go to the web sites for each of his nomination sources - many may not be opened up for Class of 2024 nominations yet, but you can look at the requirements and deadlines listed for the Class of 2023 and he can start populating his application deadline calendar, thinking of potential LoR sources, and drafting essays.

For nominations--check MOC deadlines and application packages for this year (on their individual sites); they will likely be very similar next year (for ours they were identical). It's good to check these early--one of our Senators has 8-10 essay questions to complete.

Did you read the letters that were attached? It states that "Promotions to candidate status will not start until the 1st of July. We expect that most applicants that meet our candidate guidelines and that applied before the 1st of July will be promoted to candidate status by the end of July".

My DS started his application on March 25th and was moved to candidate status on July 6th. Follow the checklist that is provided and have your DS or DD start practicing for the CFA, especially that basketball throw. :)
Good luck!
