CGAS appointment

Every applicant is considered for CGAS program. If the academy desires to see the individual at the academy but is not completely satisfied with academic performance, then they might give a CGAS appointment. I believe that there are three places that CGA sends their prep students to: Marion Military Institute (MMI), Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) and Georgia Military Academy.

Yes, these individuals are essentially guaranteed a spot in the class of 2024 as long as they keep there grades up and remain medically/physically qualified.

If you are not offered CGAS by the academy, you can "self-prep," which means you do the same program except funded by yourself. This is not an option at NAPS.

There is some more good information in this thread: https://www.serviceacademyforums.co...uestion-about-prep-schools.58151/#post-575115

@MuniMan24, Thank You for the help. I read thru the thread you mentioned, but it mostly pertained to NAPS and the Different Military "Junior Colleges" as they refer to them.

I know little or nothing about CGAS, maybe someone here can enlighten me?? It seems from reading those threads I could find that CGAS is meant to strengthen a candidate's academic credentials? Does getting selected and accepting CGAS guarantee a spot in the Class of 2024, or does it just help with next years application? And finally, if anyone can help, does it make a difference if a candidate is already considered academically qualified, whether or not they attend CGAS or a civilian university to start on their major? Thanks in advance....this is not an option we were aware of.

Here's the link regarding CGAS https://www.uscga.edu/cgas/ . It is important to point out an update to the website in that NAPS is also utilized as a CGAS school, along with GMC and MMI. Appointees to CGAS report first to CGA for an orientation in the summer prior to starting at their respective programs in the fall. Also of note is that CGAS participants enlist in the Coast Guard, and are paid as enlisted members while attending the scholars program. That extra year also goes toward their longevity in the Coast Guard. A good source of information is @Physicsguru, who is on staff at MMI. The CGAS program is highly touted as a great preparation for CGA, and any appointee should take advantage of the opportunity if it is presented to them.

@MuniMan24, @alaska66, Thank you both for your insight. Although no news is better than bad news, we are looking at options should DS not get in for this year. He has a great Plan B, but as everyone else here, strongly wants Plan A (The Academy), and only so many will get selected. I would like to be able to give him informed help with whichever direction he decides if the worst happens. There has to be some things he can do if he decides to re-apply, and whether he goes to his Plan B and then reapplies, or if we talk to him about MMI or GMC (have to some research on them as to cost, benefits of attending, and location), I would like to be informed as possible. We tried to talk about other Academies, but he does not want to attend the USMMA or USNA (the only other SA's that offer the type of major he is excited about), and has indicated that if he does not get into the Academy this year, and if he does not know what caused him not be appointed, he will likely try and enter through OCS after he graduates.

MMI has a solid SAP program and a record of sending cadets into the USCGA.

In general, yes. CGAS is meant to fill what Admissions sees as a weakness in an otherwise good candidate. Weaknesses are generally either academics or SAT/ACT scores. Selected by Admissions for CGAS is pretty much a guarantee, but, the student has to keep their nose clean and maintain a 2.5 or 3.0 while in CGAS (not sure of the GPA, it can change). My son was selected for CGAS. Several of his classmates at USCGA were CGAS, and self-preps at MMI did well in his class as well. That class is now LTJGs, and several are going for a tour in Bahrain. CGAS graduates have at least one shore billet, and at least one is XO on one of the cutters there.

My DD is at NAPS this year as part of CGAS. My wife and I could not be more impressed with the staff at the school and the staff at the CGA who take care of our daughter. ...and I mean take care of. The staff have a personal interest in seeing my daughter suceed and she is not getting special treatment, they have a personal interest in every candidate there and do everything to push, develop and prepare them. My DD has made some life long friends and I know she will miss her classmates going to Annapolis for sure. It is a remarkable experience. I send my sincere thanks to all the staff at NAPS from the staff at Ney Hall to the hyper dedicated teachers, Major Koch, Lt Rivera and Chief Rosen. Very proud to be associated to these special people through my daughter. I hope they see this note.
