Yesterday was a great day for email! Our DS was admitted to VT and earned a Type 7 ROTC scholarship.

We're still learning the ins and outs of the scholarship. Anyone have any experience they can share? Does VT offer Cadets in-state tuition or should we look into converting it to a Type 2?
(We are not VA residents).

Thanks!

Congratulations! My DS was waitlisted at VT and his scholarship application was reboarded to March. The email did state he was qualified for the scholarship, they just couldn’t make a decision. This wasn’t surprising as he wants a non technical major.

Hopefully my DS will be there with yours this Fall!

VT does not allow in-state tuitiom for out-of-staters. Which branch? Give the scholarship officer/coordinator at VT for your branch a call. We have found their Army ROTC department very helpful and there are additional scholarships available.

Thanks--branch is Air Force. DS will email this week to make an appt to talk to someone in the AFROTC office (we're overseas so just need to juggle the time zones).

Does Virginia Tech offer in state tuition for ROTC cadets?
The direct answer is no. If you are out of state the only way to get In-state rate is join the Virginia Guard from my understanding. But timing like that is usually very tight as you need to get to training etc before school starts. What usually happens if your DS or DD does that and you contract the guard will release you back to VT. But know when your in the guard you always have the chance of being deployed student or not. Also if you child is awarded ROTC scholarship VT does not wave the Room and Board approx 10K per year . Some schools do such as Norwich but not VT

Thank you for the reply!

We have the same questions. DS was accepted yesterday and has a Type 7 scholarship. We are also out of state. Thank you for the information!

If OOS you will need to convert to a Type 2 3 yr for AFROTC. BEWARE what it is now for 2018 tuition will jump for 19 and 10 when they can finally use that AFROTC type 2 which is capped at 18K.

My DD attended VT (not ROTC). In the 4 yrs she attended every yr the tuition increased @10%. Hence, what it is now, might be much higher 3 yrs from today.

Also be aware that to attend VT on a ROTC scholarship, you will have to apply to, be accepted, and join the Corps of Cadets. There is no independent AFROTC Det there.

I think that's integrated with the application now. Our DS has received both 'welcome to X' from the Dept of his chosen major as well as 'welcome to Corps of Cadets' emails--I'm assuming because he indicated he wanted to join VTCC on his application.

Interesting.

TAMU appears to allow cross-town to the AFROTC Det at UTSA, so it doesn't appear to be a uniform policy across the SMU's. Definitely is the case at VT, though. Good luck to your son-- I'm sure he will enjoy the experience.

If he ends up attending VT . Tell him to start getting sleep now. The first year there is not much of it. The pictures I have seen from my DS room with his 2 roommates in various contorted positions getting a nap in a their chair or on the hard floor as to not mess up their bunks are hilarious. Mine finds time wherever he can to catch a power nape since he is caring 19 credits this spring Tell him to keep up his running.
